“The Joy of Freedom”: BHU Celebrates 80 Years of Independence Through Art, Photography and Kathak

City Delegacies, Banaras Hindu University, organised an award and certificate distribution ceremony, marking 80 years of India’s Independence with a vibrant celebration titled “The Joy of Freedom”, blending painting, photography and Kathak into one memorable evening on 16 September 2026.

More than 150 students from across BHU took part in the painting and photography contests. In painting, Prashansika Shri claimed first place, with Dheeraj Kumar and Rohit Sharma following. Judge Dr. L. M. of Visual Arts, BHU oversaw the entries. In photography, Snehashish Dey took top honours, trailed by Nishant Ranjan and Riya Chaudhary; Pankaj Maurya and Jyotika Shakya received the first and second consolation prizes. The entries were judged by renowned photographer Manish Khatri and Dr. Rubir Sharan.

Adding grace to the evening, students who completed a two-week Kathak workshop (13–24 July 2026) performed three pieces Kathak, rich in rhythm and expression, under the guidance of Dr. Shyama Kumari, Warden, South Delegacies, BHU.

The ceremony unfolded with a graceful rhythm of voices and visions. Chief Guest Shri Gaurav Krishna Bansal (IRTS), Senior Professor, Commercial Management, Indian Railway Institute of Transport Management (IRITM), Lucknow, spoke on preserving India’s cultural heritage, while Prof. Ranjan Kumar Singh, Dean of Students, BHU, hinted at future structured, paid art and cultural workshops for students.

Welcoming the dignitaries, Prof. Lalit Mohan Agrawal, Chief Warden of City Delegacies, reminded that such initiatives nurture the holistic personality of young minds.

Dr. Ashish Kumar Gupta, Warden of North Delegacies, shared news of forthcoming activities, and Dr. Shyama Kumari, Warden of South Delegacies, gracefully offered the vote of thanks.

The evening reached its crescendo with the distribution of awards to winners of the painting and photography competitions, and certificates to the Kathak workshop participants—an elegant finale celebrating talent, tradition, and youthful creativity.

THE EVENT WAS A BEAUTIFUL REMINDER THAT FREEDOM ISN’T JUST HISTORICAL — IT’S CREATIVE, EXPRESSIVE, AND ALIVE IN EVERY BRUSHSTROKE, CLICK AND FOOTSTEP.
