Taalash, Roohani Rung, Mehfil: Anurekha Ghosh Dance Company Brings Kathak, Sufi Mysticism and Ghazal to Kolkata
Anurekha Ghosh Dance Company, supported by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kolkata, is set to present Taalash, Roohani Rung, Mehfil — an evocative evening bringing together Kathak, rhythm, Sufi mysticism, poetry and ghazal music — at G.D. Birla Sabhagar, Kolkata, on Saturday, 12 September 2026, at 6:30 p.m.
A Passage Through Rhythm, Mysticism and Melody
The specially curated programme unfolds across three distinct artistic journeys, carrying the audience from the pure exploration of rhythm into the spiritual depths of Sufi Kathak, before settling into the intimate hush of a ghazal mehfil. It is an evening conceived not as three separate performances, but as a single unfolding arc — each movement deepening the one before it.
Taalash opens the evening as an ensemble Kathak presentation performed by the young disciples of Anurekha Ghosh. Here, rhythm itself becomes the subject — its origins, its architecture, its endless expressive possibility. The production is both a tribute to Taal as the very foundation of Indian classical dance and a showcase of discipline, vigour and artistry emerging in the next generation of Kathak performers.
The evening then turns inward with Roohani Rung, Anurekha Ghosh’s acclaimed solo Sufi Kathak production, which premiered at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Mumbai, in February 2026. Moving beyond technique into the realm of devotion, the work traces the mystical dimensions of Sufi poetry through the language of the body, weaving movement, music and spiritual longing into a single, immersive dialogue.
The night draws to its close with Mehfil, a special musical offering featuring renowned vocalist Smt. Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta in a return to ghazal singing. She is joined by Ustad Roshan Ali on Sarangi and Shri Prabir Chatterjee on Tabla — three accomplished musicians coming together to honour the timeless intimacy of poetry set to melody.
Together, Taalash • Roohani Rung • Mehfil traces a rare artistic passage — from rhythm and dance to mysticism, poetry and song — offering Kolkata audiences an evening steeped in the many colours of India’s performing arts traditions.
