Subhendu Mishra — Echoes of Tradition in Contemporary Art

At Bikaner House, LTC Gallery, New Delhi, renowned artist Subhendu Mishra from the holy city of Puri unveils his recent works in a solo exhibition running from 30 April to 4 May 2026.

Rooted in the Jagannath culture and the artistic heritage of Raghurajpur, Mishra’s practice draws inspiration from Pattachitra, palm leaf art, mask-making and traditional performances like Puri Sahi Jata, Medha Nacha and Gotipua dance.

His canvases, layered with fragmented colours and recurring mask imagery, bridge continuity and transformation, weaving past traditions into contemporary expression.

Through field visits and close interaction with artisans, Mishra captures not only their techniques but also their struggles and philosophies, translating them into bold visual narratives. His use of natural colours, palm leaves, wood and masks keeps him rooted in tradition while opening new visual possibilities.

“I wish to bring attention to the condition of traditional artists and to contribute, in my own way, to  preserving and promoting these valuable cultural practices. At the same time, I seek to create a space where these traditions can be seen and appreciated in a contemporary context.”Subhendu Mishra

This exhibition is both a celebration and a responsibility—a call to preserve fading cultural practices while presenting them in a modern context.

Subhendu Mishra’s art bridges heritage and the present, carrying devotion and artistry to wider horizons.
