Shatatantri Veena Resonates at India Habitat Centre: A Baithak of Profound Classical Music

On January 28, the India Habitat Centre witnessed an evening steeped in tradition and artistry, as a soulful Baithak unfolded in collaboration with Omkarnath Mission Parampara and Legends of India. The recital featured the rare and evocative Shatatantri Veena, brought to life by its acclaimed exponent, Pandit Dishari Chakraborty.

Pandit Dishari opened with an elaborate alap and jod in Raag Kalyan, presented in the dignified Dhrupad style. This meditative prelude set the tone for an immersive journey, drawing listeners into the spiritual depths of classical music. The second half of the recital explored Raag Yaman Kalyan, where Pandit Dishari rendered three original compositions: a Vilambit Masidkhani Gat and a Madhyalaya Gat in Ektaal, both composed by him, followed by a vibrant Drut Gat inspired by the stylistic legacy of Ustad Alauddin Khan.

At the outset, Pandit Dishari offered a rare insight into the distinction between Raag Kalyan and Raag Yaman Kalyan. “While many contemporary musicians present them similarly, Baba Alauddin Khan emphasized their individuality—an interpretation rooted in tradition yet evolving through practice,” Pandit Dishari Chakraborty said. This thoughtful explanation enriched the audience’s appreciation of the recital.

The sonorous resonance of the Shatatantri Veena, paired with the depth of the ragas, left the hall spellbound. As the performance concluded at its scheduled time, the audience responded with thunderous applause, their requests for an extension met with Pandit Dishari’s gracious promise to return for a full-length recital in the future.

The evening’s tapestry was further enhanced by the artistry of Shri Sourav Guha on the tabla and Dreamy Nice on the tanpura. The presence of Shri Kartikay Vashisht on the flute and Shri Alick Sengupta representing Hindustani classical vocal music added layers of richness, making the Baithak a truly memorable celebration of India’s musical heritage.
