SANGEET SAMARPAN: A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO USTAD AASHISH KHAN
The Aashish Khan School of World Music organized a two-day musical extravaganza, “Sangeet Samarpan to our guruji Ustad Aashish Khan,” at Gyan Manch, Kolkata, on February 11 and 12, 2025.
This event was a heartfelt tribute to the legendary sarod maestro, Ustad Aashish Khan, featuring a lineup of talented artists who paid homage to him through their captivating performances.
Day 1 of the concert was a resounding success, setting the tone for a memorable musical experience. Pandit Debaprasad Chakraborty presented a captivating rendition of Raag Bhimpalashree and Raag Mishra Kafi, accompanied by Mainak Biswas on the tabla. Following this, Dipanjana Bose Chanda graced the stage with a soulful Khayal in Raag Madhuvanti in Vilyambit Ektaal and Drut Teentaal. She continued to mesmerize the audience with a Thumri and a Hori in Mishra Khamaj and Mishra Pilu, respectively, accompanied by Pandit Hiranmay Mitra on the harmonium and Dr. Abhishek Chatterjee on the tabla.
ENCHANTING PERFORMANCES AND ESTEEMED PRESENCE
The evening also featured an enchanting Odissi recital by Guru Shib Narayan Banerjee, Koyeli Chatterjee, Ankit Pandey and Sandip Gope. Malyaban Chatterjee’s vocal recital of Raag Jog, accompanied by Indranil Mullick on the tabla and Kamalakshya Mukherjee on the harmonium, was another highlight of the evening. The day concluded with a scintillating performance by Indrayuddh Majumder, who presented Alap, Jod, and Jhala in Raag Suddh Basant, followed by a Gat in Vilyambit Teental with Debjit Patitundi on the tabla. He ended his performance with a Majh Khamaj Gat in Madhyalaya and Drut Teentaal.
Padma Shri Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumder was present throughout the concert, sharing his thoughts on the event, the Aashish Khan School of World Music, and Ustad Aashish Khan. His presence added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the event.
CONTINUED HOMAGE TO USTAD AASHISH KHAN
Day 2 of the concert was equally impressive, with the artists continuing to pay homage to Ustad Aashish Khan through their performances. Pinak Bhattacharjee presented a captivating rendition of Raag Jhinjhoti, accompanied by Pran Gopal Bandopadhyay on the tabla. Pandit Sudip Chattopadhyay then took the stage, presenting Raag Marwa in Vilyambit Ektaal and Raag Patdeep, along with a piece in Abhogi, accompanied by Kingshuk Mukhopadhyay on the tabla.
MEMORABLE PERFORMANCES
Debanjan Bhattacharjee’s presentation of Pancham Sawari in Raag Suddh Basant, accompanied by Bivash Sanghai on the tabla, was another highlight of the evening. The audience was then treated to a mesmerizing tabla recital by Pandit Arup Chattopadhyay, accompanied by Pandit Hiranmay Mitra on the harmonium.
The evening concluded with a scintillating performance by Shiraz Ali Khan, nephew of Ustad Aashish Khan, who presented Alap, Jod, and Jhala on Raag Bageshri Kanada, followed by a Gat in Vilyambit and Drut Teental. He was accompanied by Pandit Arup Chattopadhyay and Anjishnu Mukherjee on the tabla. The performance reached a crescendo in Raag Bhairavi, with Debanjan Bhattacharjee joining in, creating a perfect finale.
TIRELESS EFFORTS BEHIND THE SUCCESS
The success of the event was a result of the tireless efforts of the organizers, who worked diligently to ensure that every aspect of the concert was perfect. The venue, Gyan Manch, was transformed into a hub of musical activity, treating the audience to a feast of Indian classical music.
The concert was a fitting tribute to Ustad Aashish Khan, who has dedicated his life to promoting and preserving Indian classical music. The Aashish Khan School of World Music deserves accolades for organizing this magnificent event, which brought together some of the most talented musicians in the country to pay homage to a musical legend.
