Sacred Offering in Motion – Reflections on the Akhanḍa–Dvādaśa Ghanṭā Nāda Yajña

On June 20, 2026, in New Jersey, the students of Nrityavali Gurukul (Pallavi Kathak LLC), guided by Guru Pallavi Degwekar, offered a historic twelve‑hour Akhanḍa–Dvādaśa Ghanṭā Nāda Yajña. Believed to be the first of its kind in the United States, this profound act transcended performance, becoming a collective prayer where Kathak, discipline, and devotion intertwined.

Inspired by Pandita Shama Tai Bhate’s 2008 Akhanḍa Ghungroo Nāda in memory of Guru Rohini Tai Bhate, Pallavi Degwekar carried its spirit across continents, creating a sacred space for uninterrupted Kathak sādhanā. Months of rigorous riyaaz, rehearsals, and reflection culminated in this offering, with students arriving before sunrise to transform an ordinary hall into a sanctified arena. Every gesture—arranging the altar, preparing offerings, or assisting one another—became part of the Yajña, reminding all that devotion begins in the quietest acts of service.

The echoes of this day continue to resonate, not merely as dance, but as a living testament to the Guru–Shishya Paramparā, a lineage where art becomes prayer and motion becomes offering.

Sacred Offering in Motion – The Spirit of the Yajña

The day began with sacred rituals, ‘Sankalp and Guru Poojan’, setting the spiritual tone for twelve uninterrupted hours of Kathak, padhant, shlokas, and devotional recitation. From 7:59 a.m., movement and prayer flowed as one, carefully envisioned by Guru Pallavi Degwekar to guide students through the many dimensions of Kathak—discipline, rhythm, abhinaya, and devotion.

The Highlight of Reverence

The day’s most luminous moments unfolded through the presence of distinguished guests and well‑wishers, whose blessings affirmed the significance of the Yajña.

Joining virtually from India, revered gurus Pandita Maneesha Tai Sathe and Pandit Ramdasji Palsule reminded students that oceans cannot divide a shared artistic lineage.

In New Jersey, Professor Fatima Logan‑Alston of Hunter College and Edison Township Council President Joseph Coyle honored Guru Pallavi Degwekar with an official Proclamation, marking the offering as historic.

Surrounded by families, friends, and community, the Gurukul witnessed how devotion in motion transcends cultural boundaries, speaking a universal language of reverence and unity.

Fatigue inevitably surfaced, yet a single glance or word from Pallavi Tai rekindled strength, transforming exhaustion into surrender. Guests and gurus from India joined virtually, offering blessings, while dignitaries in New Jersey honored the event with official recognition. What unfolded was more than dance—it was sādhanā, a collective act of devotion.

Perhaps the most profound transformation lay in the students themselves: perseverance gave way to shared care, and kindness became as meaningful as rhythm. In the end, the Yajña revealed Kathak not merely as performance, but as a sacred offering of humility, unity and presence.

Reflecting on the Yajña, Guru Pallavi Degwekar reminded her disciples that it was never about stamina or display, but about surrender, humility, and the deeper philosophy of Kathak within the Guru–Shishya Paramparā. Each step, each shloka, each act of service became an offering to the Divine.

As evening descended, her own solo embodied decades of sādhanā, inspiring students with grace and conviction. The Yajña concluded at 8:00 p.m. with collective tatkār, sacred chants, and resonant shankha, followed by silence filled with gratitude.

Even after applause faded, students quietly folded costumes, cleaned the hall, and restored the space—reminding all that true sādhanā continues in seva, where devotion endures beyond the dance.

FOR THE DISCIPLES OF NRITYAVALI GURUKUL, THE Akhanḍa–Dvādaśa Ghanṭā Nāda Yajña ENDURES AS MORE THAN TWELVE HOURS OF DANCE—IT REMAINS A TIMELESS TESTAMENT TO THE GURU–SHISHYA PARAMPARĀ AND KATHAK’S POWER TO UNITE HEARTS.

The Akhanḍa–Dvādaśa Ghanṭā Nāda Yajña – Kathak became pure prayer and collective sādhanā.
