RAJA DUTTA — BHARATANATYAM’S RADIANT JOURNEY

Raja Dutta: The Bharatanatyam Maestro from Kolkata Redefining Classical Indian Dance

In the timeless corridors of classical Indian dance, few names resonate with as much grace and gravitas as Raja Dutta. Hailing from the culturally vibrant city of Kolkata, Raja Dutta is not merely a performer of Bharatanatyam — he is a living vessel of a tradition that has traveled centuries to find, in him, a devoted and disciplined custodian.

Every gesture of his hands, every measured step, and every flicker of expression on his face carries the weight of rigorous training and the lightness of true artistry.

Raja Dutta counts himself among the senior-most disciples of the legendary Padma Bhushan Guru Dr. C. V. Chandrasekhar, a luminary in Bharatanatyam, a gifted scholar, composer and choreographer who left an indelible mark on Indian classical arts —from leading the Faculty of Performing Arts at M.S. University, Baroda, to mesmerizing audiences alongside his wife, Jaya Chandrasekhar—was one of passion and brilliance, under whose tutelage he has spent years meticulously refining his craft. But his story begins earlier, in the quiet devotion of a young dancer under Guru Anita Mullick, whose early guidance planted the first seeds of his lifelong pursuit. That pursuit soon carried him to Chennai — the spiritual home of Bharatanatyam — where his hunger for depth and precision led him to the venerable Dr. C. V. Chandrasekhar, and where his artistry matured into something far more profound.

A scholar as much as a performer, Raja Dutta holds both a Bachelor’s degree in Dance and a Master’s degree in Bharatanatyam from the esteemed Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. His versatility extends further still, into the Pandanallur style of Bharatanatyam, nurtured under Dr. Mamta Neogi Nakra, founder of the revered Kalabharati legacy in Montreal.

Over the years, his artistic vocabulary has been enriched by immersive training with some of the most eminent stalwarts of the form — Padma Shri Guru Leela Samson, Guru P. T. Narendran, and Guru Brega Vasantha — each lending their wisdom to shape his dance into a symphony of precision, grace, and emotive storytelling.

Today, Raja Dutta continues to evolve under the guidance of Smt. Guru Padmashri Geeta Chandran, regularly attending her master classes and workshops — a testament to his belief that mastery in classical dance is never a destination, but an unending pilgrimage.

Beyond the stage, Raja Dutta is the Founder and Principal of Manjistha Kala Kendra, an institution dedicated to nurturing the next generation of dancers in Bharatanatyam, Rabindra Nritya, and Creative Dance. Through both his artistry and his pedagogy, he breathes new life into an ancient tradition, ensuring that its soul continues to inspire long after the final note of the mridangam fades.
