Kolkata’s Classical Stage Comes Alive: Prerona Returns for a 9th Year

Malashree, a name synonymous with cultural excellence, brings back Prerona — An Indian Dance Festival for its 9th edition on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, from 6:00 p.m. onwards at Gyan Manch, Kolkata.

The evening unites five classical traditions — Odissi, Manipuri, Sattriya Nritya, Bharatanatyam and Kathak — through performances by both seasoned artists and rising talent.

Highlights include Malashree Odissi Group’s Navagraha under Dr. Arpita Venkatesh, KRITIKA Odissi Group’s Yatra directed by Guru Smt. Rina Jana, and Malashree Kathak Group’s Umang, choreographed by Smt. Sampita Chatterjee.

Solo presentations by Somabha Bandopadhyay (Manipuri), Biraj Roy and Rumi Debnath (Sattriya), and Jalsa Chandra (Bharatanatyam) round out a rich repertoire, illuminated by Nitya Naskar’s lighting design.

The evening also honors SNA Awardees 2026 Smt. Tapati Chowdhurie and Shri Dinesh Poddar, with Dr. Haimanti Chattopadhyay as Chief Guest and Guru Smt. Rina Jana as Guest of Honor.

Mark your calendars too for Malashree’s seminar on 20 September, where Shri Piyal Bhattacharya explores Aesthetics in Indian Performing Arts at Rajya Sangeet Academy, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

DR. ARPITA VENKATESH – MALASHREE’S RADIANT ODISSI FLAME

Dr. Arpita Venkatesh, a gifted torchbearer of Odissi, blossomed under the guidance of Guru Shri Muralidhar Majhi and the celebrated Smt. Aloka Kanungo at Shinjan Nrityalaya. Her artistry, enriched by interactions with Manipuri stalwart Smt. Kalavati Devi, shines in acclaimed productions like Shakti and Sthapatya Satya. Today, through her institution Malashree, Kolkata, she nurtures disciples with love and precision, ensuring Odissi’s timeless rhythm flows into the future.

Her brilliance is adorned with many honors, critical acclaim for Satyam Jnanam Anantam, and distinctions like Nritya Ratna and Sangeet Prabhakar. With performances across India, UK, Germany, Scotland, Bangladesh, Nepal, she stands as a luminous bridge between tradition and global stages.

Through Prerona, Malashree continues its heartfelt mission to nurture the classical arts of India—bringing both revered masters and promising new voices, in a celebration where tradition meets luminous innovation.

The festival’s visual poetry will be illuminated by the refined light design of Nitya Naskar, whose artistry will weave radiance through every performance, enhancing its moods and aesthetic depth.

A stage where tradition breathes and legacy dances on.
