Kolkata Music Festival: A Tribute to Healing Through Harmony

Under the gracious aegis of Gokul Nag Memorial Foundation and Peshkar Academy of Art & Culture, the Kolkata Music Festival returns to the iconic Mahanayak Uttam Mancha on August 14th at 3 p.m., weaving together the timeless elegance of Indian Classical Music and heartfelt gratitude to the health saviours of the city.

This annual celebration stands as a luminous ode to those who heal and serve, where melody becomes medicine and rhythm becomes reverence.

Featuring some of the most distinguished maestros of classical tradition, the festival transforms the stage into a sanctum of sound — a place where devotion, artistry, and compassion converge.

Conducted by Pandit Subhen Chatterjee, the festival opens with an instrumental ensemble by the talented students of Peshkar Academy, setting a tone of devotion and artistry.

The evening glows with performances by Amitava Chatterjee on sitar and Rupak Bhattacharjee on tabla, followed by the soulful vocals of Vidushi Ruchira Panda, accompanied by Ujjwal Bharati (Tabla) and Rupashree Bhattacharya (Harmonium). A heartfelt felicitation honors eminent physicians — Dr. Shantanu Nandy, Dr. Sougata Deb, and Dr. Mahuya Chanda — the true healers of our times.

The stage then welcomes Abhisek Lahiri on sarod and Aarchik Banerjee on tabla, leading to a mesmerizing tabla solo by Pandit Kumar Bose, supported by Hiranmay Mitra on harmonium and Rohen Bose.

The evening’s grace is woven together by comperes Sutapa Chatterjee and Sanjay Banerjee, ensuring every note resonates with gratitude and reverence.

With the blessings of Pandit Subhen Chatterjee and Vidushi Mita Nag, the convenors of this noble initiative, the evening promises not just music but a soulful communion — a reminder that art, when offered in gratitude, becomes the purest form of prayer.

Echoes of Sangeetacharya Gokul Chandra Nag

The Gokul Nag Memorial Foundation blooms as a shrine of Hindustani music, founded by sitarist Mita Nag in tender remembrance of her grandfather, Sangeetacharya Gokul Chandra Nag of the Vishnupur Gharana. His presence, lost to her at fourteen, became a luminous memory that shaped her resolve to keep his name alive through this institution.

Inaugurated in 2002 at Uttam Mancha, the Foundation has since offered a stage to young talents and maestros alike, hosting seminars, workshops, and preserving rare recordings of Gokul Nag and Manilal Nag.

Born in Bankura in 1907, Gokul Chandra Nag’s journey carried him from court musician to AIR broadcasts, from Udayshankar’s troupe to sitar recitals praised alongside Ustad Inayat Khan—his music, timeless and radiant.
