HEADS – Every Face Holds a Story: Nayan Naveli Gallery Brings Together India’s Finest Artists in a Landmark Exhibition on Identity and Expression

This September, New Delhi’s art circuit turns its gaze inward with HEADS – Every Face Holds a Story, an exhibition that treats the human head not as a subject to be captured, but as a language to be read.

Presented by Nayan Naveli Gallery and conceived and curated by gallerist Amrita Kochhar, the show will run from 17 to 23 September 2026 at the Shridharani Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, open daily from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Beyond the Portrait: The Face as a Site of Meaning

Portraiture has long occupied a comfortable corner of Indian art history — a likeness rendered, a resemblance honoured. HEADS asks for something more restless. It positions the human face and head as a terrain where identity, memory, emotion and experience converge, insisting that no two artists will ever read that terrain the same way. A furrowed brow, a tilted skull, an eye rendered in fractured colour — each becomes a sentence in a much larger, wordless narrative.

The exhibition brings together an extraordinary line-up of artists — Anjolie Ela Menon, Arpana Caur, G. Subramanian, Gurcharan Singh, Gurpreet Kaur, Jatin Das, Jayasri Burman, Jogen Chowdhury, K. Laxma Goud, Krishen Khanna, Krishnendu Porel, Maïté Delteil, Nagesh Goud, Naresh Kapuria, Nayanaa Kanodia, Ramesh Gorjala, Rameshwar Broota, Ranjeeta Kant, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Sakti Burman, Shipra Bhattacharya, Thota Vaikuntam, Vasundhara Broota, and Vimmi Indra.

Across these names lies a spectrum of artistic approaches. Some artists remain rooted in realism and classical portraiture, rendering the face with an almost reverent precision. Others move toward abstraction, symbolism and distortion — bending form until the face becomes less a likeness and more a feeling, a memory refracted through paint. Together, their works transform the gallery into a dialogue between eras, schools and philosophies, all circling the same enduring subject.

Adding to the exhibition’s sense of occasion, several works have been created specifically for this show — lending the collection a rare freshness and exclusivity rarely found when so many established names share a single space. These new commissions sit alongside carefully chosen canvases that already carry the unmistakable signature of each artist’s lifelong practice.

Beyond its artistic ambitions, HEADS carries a deeply personal thread. The exhibition is held in loving memory of Late Dr. Manjit Kochhar, mother of curator Amrita Kochhar. An eminent physician, Dr. Kochhar dedicated her life to medicine, charity and seva, embodying a quiet devotion to service and community. In this light, the exhibition becomes more than a curatorial project — it stands as a heartfelt tribute to a life spent giving, framed fittingly within an exploration of human faces and the stories they silently hold.
