Dr. Bilambita Banisudha: Voice, Scholarship and the Monsoon Rāg-s

Dr. Bilambita Banisudha, PhD, stands as a luminous presence in the world of Hindustani Classical and Semi-Classical music. As Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Music at Sikkim University, she is celebrated not only as a distinguished vocalist but also as a scholar and educator whose work bridges performance and deep musicological inquiry. Her artistry flows seamlessly into her academic pursuits, where devotional song traditions and intricate compositional analysis form the heart of her research.

Currently, Dr. Banisudha is engaged in two profound explorations: the evocative world of monsoon rāg-s in Hindustani music, and an extensive analytical study of women’s voices in the harvesting songs of Sikkim.

Her research delves into thematic dimensions, uncovering how nature, rhythm and gendered experience intertwine to shape cultural soundscapes. These projects reflect her rare ability to weave scholarship with lived tradition, illuminating the subtle ways music mirrors the cycles of life and the spirit of community.

Beyond academia, she is a graded artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, with recognised proficiency in both classical and semi-classical forms. Her performances carry the gravitas of scholarship yet retain the emotive resonance of devotion, making her a unique figure who embodies the dual essence of performer and thinker.

Dr. Bilambita Banisudha unveils her soulful devotion in Meera Bhakti Sarita, a river of love and dedication now flowing on Spotify.

Her recordings at Prasar Bharati, All India Radio, capture her mastery over both classical rāgas such as Bilaskhani Todi and Sudha Sarang, and semi-classical forms like Thumri and Dadra in Khamaj, Bhairavi, and Pilu.

A prolific writer, she has authored significant works including Multiculturalism in Indian Music: A Compilation of Essays (2023) and Compositional Forms of Dhrupad (2021). Her scholarly articles, published in journals like Sangeet Galaxy, STOM Journal, and Anhad, span themes from devotional traditions of Odisha to musicological studies of rāga and tāla. Through her pen and her voice, Dr. Banisudha continues to enrich the cultural and intellectual landscape of Indian music.

Dr. Bilambita Banisudha has illuminated national and international forums with her lectures and papers, from Banaras Hindu University to Visva-Bharati and Dibrugarh University.
