CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF MADHUMITA MISRA (ROY): A RENOWNED KATHAK DANCER

Madhumita Misra (Roy) is a well-known name in the Kathak dance field. Born into a musical family, she was an infant prodigy who initially nurtured her talent under the guidance of the late Pandit Ramgopal Mishra in the Jaipur Gharana. She further honed her skills in the Lucknow Gharana under Pandit Vijai Shankar at the Padatik Dance Centre in Kolkata. Later, she received advanced training from the Kathak Maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj at Kathak Kendra, Delhi. A top-graded artiste of Doordarshan, Madhumita has traveled extensively across India and abroad, establishing herself as an eminent Kathak dancer both as a soloist and a choreographer.

In 1991, Madhumita Misra (Roy) participated in the Festival of India held in Germany and performed under the esteemed guidance of Pandit Birju Maharaj and Smt. Kumudini Lakhia, representing the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Delhi.

Madhumita Misra (Roy) has achieved remarkable milestones in her illustrious career

Madhumita Misra (Roy) is a top-graded artiste of Doordarshan and an outstanding category artiste in the ICCR panel, Delhi. In 2014, she received the International Choreographer Award from the School of Theatre Arts, Visakhapatnam, and was honored with the Devadasi Award in 2017. 

She served on the executive committee of Kathak Kendra, Lucknow in 2012-13. A National Scholarship holder in 1989, she also received a fellowship from Kathak Kendra in 1992 and the title “Singar Mani” from the Kal-ke-Kalakar music conference in Mumbai. 

Madhumita Misra (Roy) has trained many students, with over thirty receiving national scholarships, and some becoming graded artists in Doordarshan and ICCR. Currently, she is a guest lecturer at Rabindra Bharati University and the founder-director of Ghungroo Dance Academy, a center for dance.

Madhumita Misra (Roy)’s contributions to Kathak have been recognized globally

Madhumita Misra (Roy) has performed extensively both in India and abroad. She choreographed the Kathak segment for the T20 World Cup Cricket Final in Kolkata in 2016. She has participated in numerous prestigious events like Nritya Sangam, Khajuraho Nritya Samaroh, and the Dover Lane Music Conference. 

Internationally, she has performed in countries such as the USA, Australia, China, Egypt and many more. She has also been part of significant cultural celebrations, including India’s 70th Independence in Sudan and the Festival of India in various countries including China, Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea, Egypt, Argentina, Italy, Chile.  Her contributions to Kathak have been recognized globally.
