A.VENIR: Where the Future Already Lives
Véronique Durruty at Espace 44, Paris
What if the future is not somewhere ahead of us, but already woven into the present?
That is the question behind A.VENIR, the new exhibition by French visual artist Véronique Durruty. The title plays on a double meaning in French: à venir (“what is to come”) and avenir (“the future,” even “destiny”). It speaks of the imminent and the ultimate horizon at once.
The show places two contrasting series face to face.
Effondrements (Collapses) is a photographic series built on layered images. A familiar reality meets its catastrophic double. An ice shelf burns in its own fire. A forest dissolves into modern architecture. A sea turtle chokes in a sea of plastic. A nude, a pose as old as art history itself, veils itself under a new modesty.
Red runs through every frame as a threshold of alert, prohibition and combustion.
The work does not stage the disaster. It reveals how quietly the disaster already coexists with what still survives, suspended between beauty and anxiety.
Espoirs (Hopes) answers with deliberately naive, childlike collages, drawings and artist’s books, shaped like amulets or gri-gri charms. Are they pious wishes, or faith in love, lightness, struggle and solidarity?
The photographs are analog, numbered, signed and limited to five copies, while every drawing and artist’s book is unique.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: VÉRONIQUE DURRUTY
For nearly three decades, Véronique Durruty has explored the delicate space between what we see and what we feel. Through photography and visual art, she creates dreamlike worlds where colours breathe, textures whisper, and emotions take shape, gently questioning our ideas of beauty and truth.
Represented by galleries across France, her work has appeared in more than forty books and in cities from London and New York to Abu Dhabi and Tokyo, as well as at the Rencontres d’Arles and the MuCEM in Marseille. A member of the humanist agency Rapho, home to Brassaï, Robert Doisneau and Willy Ronis, she works from Paris.
Her honours include the acquisition of three works by the French Ministry of Culture (2019), the Histoires Photographiques award for Indian Worlds (2018), and the Maram al-Masri Prize for The Bosom of the Earth (2018). Earlier, she was chosen by the Bureau des Objets Émotifs for its 2013–2014 collection, and in 2013, Pullman added twenty of her images to its permanent contemporary art collection.
Durruty’s practice explores the power of imagination and the invisible. She lives and works in Paris.
