Shilpataru at Twenty: A Celebratory Journey Through Contemporary Art in Puducherry
On the evening of 30 October 2026, the heritage ambience of Maison Perumal in Puducherry transformed into a vibrant meeting ground of artistic voices as Shilpataru, one of the region’s respected art collectives, inaugurated its special group exhibition marking twenty remarkable years of artistic engagement (2006–2026).
The exhibition was formally inaugurated at 6:30 PM by Chief Guest Shri Vignesh Kannan, MLA, Raj Bhavan Constituency, in the presence of artists, art enthusiasts, collectors, and members of Puducherry’s cultural community. More than an exhibition, the event unfolded as a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and a shared commitment to art that has sustained Shilpataru’s journey over two decades.
Set within the elegant heritage surroundings of Maison Perumal, Heritage Town, the exhibition presents a rich constellation of artistic expressions brought together by twenty-one artists, each contributing a distinctive visual language.
The participating artists include Alexraj.S, Antra Sinha, Anna Morozova, Danasegar.S, Gayathry.D, Giribala Tripathy, Gubendhiran.K, Keiko Mima, Kirti Chandak, Nele Martens, Padmanaban.T, Ramkumar.A, R. Rajkumar Sthabathy, Robi Ganguly, V. Santhi Siri, P. Saravanan, Tiroumale.D, Vengatesh.B and Vishwajyoti Mohrhoff, and others whose works collectively reflect the diversity and vitality of contemporary artistic practice.
Moving through the exhibition, visitors encounter a compelling dialogue between tradition and experimentation, memory and imagination, local sensibilities and global perspectives.
One of the most engaging aspects of the exhibition is the remarkable diversity of mediums, themes, and visual narratives. Paintings, mixed-media explorations, sculptural sensibilities, and contemporary interpretations coexist with striking harmony, creating an immersive experience for viewers.
The featured artwork chosen had already drawn considerable attention, and discussions among participating artists and visitors reflected a shared appreciation for the quality and depth of the works on display. The exhibition succeeds in offering not only individual artistic statements but also a collective portrait of the evolving cultural landscape that Shilpataru has helped nurture over the past twenty years.
What makes this anniversary exhibition particularly significant is its spirit of continuity. Founded in 2006, Shilpataru has grown into a meaningful platform that encourages artistic exchange across regions and generations. This commemorative exhibition stands as both a retrospective acknowledgment of that journey and a confident glance toward the future.
The works reveal an enduring belief in art’s ability to connect people across cultural boundaries, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and engage with the many dimensions of contemporary life.
As visitors wander through the thoughtfully curated spaces of Maison Perumal, they discover an exhibition that is at once intimate and expansive.
In a city renowned for its artistic and cultural heritage, Shilpataru’s twentieth-anniversary exhibition emerges as a memorable landmark, reaffirming the enduring relevance of art as a language of dialogue, beauty, and human connection.
