The Silent Dialogue – Exhibition in Chennai: Where Granite Meets Colour in a Stunning Art Fusion
Chennai’s art lovers are in for a visual treat. “The Silent Dialogue – Where Stone Speaks & Colour Responds,” a rare confluence of sculpture and painting, opened on 24th September at the Lalit Kala Akademi, Regional Centre, Chennai, and remains open to the public till 30th September (11 am – 7 pm).
The show brings together two masters: Kalaichemmal T. Baskaran, a National Award-winning sculptor from Mamallapuram, and Kalaimamani Dr. Gopal J, a celebrated painter from Puducherry with over three decades of artistic journey across India and Africa.
Baskaran’s granite works — carved with rhythm, balance and quiet strength — stand in dialogue with Gopal J’s vibrant, travel-inspired canvases, nearly 100 paintings pulsing with colour and movement. Together, stone’s stillness and paint’s energy create a conversation that’s as poetic as it is powerful.
Inaugurated by Hon’ble Justice N. Senthilkumar of the Madras High Court, the exhibition was graced by an illustrious gathering of minds and talents.
Among the distinguished guests were Thiru. R. Balakrishnan IAS (Retd.), Indus researcher and Honorary Consultant at the Indus Research Centre; Thiru. Trotsky Marudhu, eminent contemporary artist; Thiru. Dr. Sivaraman, Managing Director of Arogya Health Centre, Chennai; Thiru. Dr. G. Sundar, Director of Roja Muthiah Research Library, Chennai; Thiru. C. E. Sathya, Founder of Mallai Thamizh Sangam, Chennai; and Thiru. A. Sowrirajan, Managing Director of Adyar Students Xerox, Chennai. Their presence lent the occasion a rare blend of scholarship, artistry and cultural resonance.
At the heart of The Silent Dialogue stood Kalaichemmal T. Baskaran’s granite sculptures, transforming immovable stone into rhythm and poetry, with a legacy of 40 workshops and exhibitions across 16 countries. In a vibrant counterpoint, Kalaimamani Dr. Gopal J’s 100 paintings, shaped by decades of journeys, infused colour, memory, and emotion—together weaving a dialogue of silence and resonance.
