Aaveg: Between the Finite and the Infinite-
A Solo Exhibition by Vasant Dora | Curated by Jyoti A Kathpalia

Artist and architect Vasant Dora’s evocative new solo exhibitionAaveg: Between the Finite and the Infinite, curated by Jyoti A Kathpalia, unfolds on 8 September 2026 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Aaveg, a word that carries within it the charge of momentum, urgency and passion, becomes both title and thesis: an invitation to witness the current that runs from the tangible to the transcendent, from structure to spirit.

The exhibition unfolds across two interlinked bodies of work. It opens with Habitat Scapes, a series rooted firmly in the finite — the built environment, the geometry of cities, the architecture of dwelling and belonging.

From this grounded vocabulary of walls, grids and inhabited space, the exhibition gradually dissolves into Samsara, where the language shifts from the architectural to the elemental, drawing on the ceaseless cycle of existence and the primal energies of Shiva and Shakti, purusha and prakriti. Between these two poles — the constructed and the cosmic — Vasant Dora stages a dialogue that is at once disciplined and unrestrained, mapping the passage from matter to energy with vigour, intensity and fearless conviction.

Vasant Dora’s own journey mirrors this convergence of the rational and the intuitive. Born in Jamshedpur, in present-day Jharkhand, he trained as an architect at the Chandigarh College of Architecture before completing his master’s degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

His career began in Chicago and later took root in India, where he built and led his own architectural practice for nearly four decades. Yet alongside this disciplined engagement with space and structure ran a second, equally enduring pursuit — art, first kindled by his father, himself an artist, and nurtured over a lifetime into a distinct and deeply personal visual language.

It is this dual inheritance — the architect’s precision and the artist’s abandon — that gives Dora’s work its singular character. Habitat Scapes channels his response to urbanism, to the cities and dwellings that shape collective life, rendered with the structural clarity of one who has spent decades designing lived space. But architecture, in Vasant Dora’s hands, refuses to remain purely physical. It becomes instead a vessel for something larger — a space in which spiritual yearning and human striving find form. This is the threshold at which Habitat Scapes gives way to Samsara, the built world opening onto the eternal theatre of existence.

“I present two works in dialogue with each other,” Vasant Dora reflects. “How can one separate life from the spiritual, or the habitat from the samsara? I have attempted to express the human condition both as matter and also as a surge of energies, emotions and forces. Our existence encompasses rational structure as well as a tumultuous rush of emotion — and that is the essence of this exhibition.”

Curator Jyoti A Kathpalia describes the exhibition as a rare confluence of sensibilities:

“This exhibition is unique, for it carries traces of Dora the architect as well as Dora the thinker, poet, and spiritualist. It is not often that one encounters art in which all of these qualities come together.” That convergence, she notes, gives the work its distinctive character — soft grids meeting flaming colour, structural discipline meeting poetic force, with echoes of urban geometry alongside the lyricism of Khalil Gibran, the resonance of Bhupen Hazarika, and the quiet labour of human civilisation itself.

Aaveg: Between the Finite and the Infinite will be on view at the Visual Arts Gallery, New Delhi, from 8 to 11 September 2026.
