Joy of Freedom: BHU’s Photography Exhibition in Varanasi Celebrates 80 Years of Independence Through the Lens of Youth

Monday, 24 August 2026 — On a bright Monday morning that seemed to carry its own quiet symbolism, the walls of Kala Sutra Art Studio and Gallery at the City Delegacies of Banaras Hindu University came alive with colour, memory and meaning.

The occasion was the inauguration of Joy of Freedom –a photography and painting exhibition conceived to honor the diverse, deeply personal ways in which freedom is felt, imagined and lived — mounted as part of the university’s celebrations marking the nation’s 80th Independence Day.

A Canvas Woven From a Nation’s Many Freedoms

There is a particular kind of eloquence in a photograph that words often struggle to match, and Joy of Freedom leans fully into that truth. Rather than offering a single, fixed idea of what independence means, the exhibition unfolds as a mosaic — fragments of Indian life, culture, nature, society, and human emotion, each frame a small meditation on liberty as it is experienced rather than merely declared.

More than 130 entries poured in from students eager to translate their inner world into image, and from this outpouring, 65 photographers were selected to see their work displayed for the public to witness and reflect upon. Alongside them stand ten of the finest paintings drawn from an earlier competition held in the same spirit of celebration, their pigments and brushstrokes adding yet another register — vivid, tactile, unguarded — to the exhibition’s exploration of what it means to be free.

Voices That Opened the Doors

The exhibition was formally inaugurated by Prof. Uttama Dixit, Dean of the Faculty of Visual Arts at Banaras Hindu University, who spoke warmly of the theme’s relevance and expressed her admiration for the depth and imagination on display.

Joining her as Chief Guest was the celebrated photographer Manish Khatri, whose presence lent the occasion both craft and credibility, while Prof. Ranjan Kumar Singh, Dean of Students at BHU, graced the event as Guest of Honour. Both dignitaries spoke appreciatively of the university’s continued commitment to nurturing student talent through co-curricular platforms such as this one — spaces where creativity is not an afterthought but a genuine extension of learning.

Behind every strong exhibition lies careful curation, and this one was no exception. The photographs on view were evaluated by a panel that included Dr. Sunil Choudhary, Head of the Department of Radiotherapy, and Dr. (Maj.) Rubir, alongside fellow judges whose discerning eyes helped shape the final selection from the flood of entries received.

More Than an Exhibit — A Statement

What lingers after walking through Joy of Freedom is the sense that photography here is doing something more ambitious than simple documentation.

Each image becomes a quiet argument: that freedom is not an abstraction confined to history books and flag-hoisting ceremonies, but something felt in the ordinary textures of daily life. The guests who moved through the gallery on inauguration day did so unhurriedly, pausing often, visibly moved by the sincerity and craft the young photographers had brought to their subjects.

Prof. Lalit Mohan Aggarwal, Warden of the City Delegacies, welcomed the gathering with characteristic warmth, setting the tone for an event attended by university teachers, research scholars, students from various faculties, and art enthusiasts from across the city.

The programme’s smooth coordination was overseen by Dr. Ashish Kumar Gupta, Warden of the North Delegacy, City Delegacies, BHU.
