Mirabai Chanu Strikes Gold: India’s Weightlifting Queen Wins Historic Third Straight Commonwealth Title in Glasgow

India’s campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow began on the brightest note possible, as Mirabai Chanu delivered the nation’s first gold medal with a performance that bordered on the sublime. 

The 31-year-old weightlifting icon dominated the women’s 48kg category, hoisting a record-shattering total of 190 kilograms — 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk — to rewrite the Games’ record books.

It was a victory that extended her golden legacy, marking a stunning third consecutive Commonwealth title after her triumphs in 2018 and 2022.

India’s momentum carried further, with Chanambam Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi each claiming silver in the men’s weightlifting events, their lifts echoing the same spirit of record-chasing excellence. In the boxing ring, Jadumani Singh and Preeti Pawar punched their way into the quarter-finals, keeping India’s medal hopes alive across disciplines.
