Sriparna Bose — A Shining Star of Odissi Dance and Graceful Storytelling
SRIPARNA BOSE, A GIFTED ARTIST WITH A HEART DEEPLY ROOTED IN TRADITION, IS CELEBRATED FOR HER VERSATILITY AS A DANCER, HER THOUGHTFUL VISION AS A CHOREOGRAPHER AND HER UNWAVERING PATIENCE AS A TEACHER.
On the sacred occasion of Guru Purnima, renowned Odissi exponent Sriparna Bose reflects with graceful depth on her decades-long artistic journey—a tribute to tradition, devotion and the timeless bond between guru and disciple.
Sriparna Bose’s artistic journey in Odissi began under the loving mentorship of Guru Muralidhar Majhi and blossomed under the renowned guidance of Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Guru Aloka Kanungo. She is still moving forward under the guidance of Guru Aloka Kanungo.
“Guru Muralidhar Majhi lit the first lamp of Odissi in Kolkata —and its brilliance still dances in the devotion of his disciples,” says renowned Sriparna Bose.
“Born on 13 April 1945 in the serene village of Sabulia, Odisha, Guru Muralidhar Majhi rose from humble beginnings to become a revered legend in the world of Odissi dance. Encouraged by his early mentors, Guru Arjun Sahoo and Guru Bauribandhu Sahoo, he began with the traditional Gotipua style before dedicating himself fully to classical Odissi. After losing his father at a young age, his journey led him to Bhubaneswar, where he studied with distinction under great masters like Guru Pankaj Charan Das and Guru Devaprasad Das. His grace, discipline, and love for the art earned him the esteemed title of Nrityacharya.
Today, his legacy shines brightly in every rhythm and movement passed down through the Guru-Shishya tradition,” Sriparna Bose remembers him as the soul who turned rhythm into legacy.
As a senior disciple and devoted member of Shinjan Nrityalaya, Sriparna brings depth and soul to every performance. With a Master’s degree in Odissi Dance from Rabindra Bharati University, where she earned First Class Second Rank, her academic brilliance reflects the same dedication that she brings to the stage.
“I completed my B.Sc. in Eco-Science under the University of Calcutta in 1994, but my heart moved to rhythm. By 1997, I had earned my Bachelor’s with special honors in Odissi Dance from Rabindra Bharati University—and in 1999, I stepped further into grace with a Master’s in the same art. Dance didn’t just become my discipline—it became my journey.” — Sriparna Bose
Her artistry is not just movement — it is a timeless dance of culture, devotion and expression.
