Onkuran 2025: A Grand Celebration of Bharatanatyam in Kolkata

On 9 June 2025, Thakurpukur Chidananda Dance Academy will present its much-anticipated annual cultural event, Onkuran 2025, at Madhusudhan Mancha, Kolkata.

Under the esteemed guidance of Bharatanatyam virtuoso Prerna Gangopadhyay, this evening promises to be a mesmerizing journey into the grace and depth of Indian classical dance.

With a legacy of nurturing talent and preserving tradition, the academy continues to be a beacon of artistic excellence. Onkuran is not just a performance—it is a heartfelt tribute to the rhythmic beauty and expressive storytelling of Bharatanatyam. The event will feature captivating presentations that reflect the dedication and discipline of the academy’s dancers, bringing to life centuries-old traditions with contemporary flair.

Leading this artistic endeavor is Prerna Gangopadhyay, an award-winning Bharatanatyam exponent and a post-graduate from Tamil University, Chennai. Having honed her craft under revered mentors like Sri P.T. Narendran and Smt. Saroja Vaidyanathan, she has spent over a decade shaping the next generation of classical dancers. Since founding the Thakurpukur Chidananda Dance Academy in 2017, she has been instrumental in fostering a deeper understanding of Bharatanatyam’s rich vocabulary and emotive depth.

Mesmerizing tapestry of tradition and creativity

The evening unfolds with Nritya Manjari, a vibrant garland of classical Bharatanatyam, capturing the essence of rhythm and devotion.

Young talents take center stage with Choto Der Nazrul, breathing life into the soulful verses of Bidrohi Kavi Kazi Nazrul Islam. Their innocent expressions and graceful movements pay homage to the legendary poet’s fiery spirit.

Pancha Kavi bridges generations, bringing iconic Bengali literary creations to life through dance. Each performance is a tribute to the richness of the language, blending poetry with elegance.

The evening crescendos with Shyama, a deeply evocative dance drama inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s masterpiece. A tale of love, longing and destiny unfolds in a compelling interplay of movement and emotion.

Guided by the vision of Prerna Gangopadhyay, the academy’s mission transcends boundaries, spreading the beauty of Indian classical dance across cultures. Through performances and interactive sessions, it continues to foster harmony, appreciation and the timeless language of art.
