Water Waves — An Exquisite Confluence of Artistic Vision
From 20 April to 26 April 2026, the city of Trivandrum will host a remarkable exhibition that celebrates the creative brilliance of two renowned artists — Surendran Karthyayan and Robert Lopez. Titled “Water Waves”, the exposition unfolds at the Museum Auditorium Gallery, inviting audiences into a world where fluidity, rhythm and imagination converge.
Surendran Karthyayan’s works, deeply rooted in Indian sensibilities yet strikingly contemporary, evoke the timeless dialogue between tradition and innovation. His canvases ripple with cultural resonance, offering viewers a journey through layered textures and poetic symbolism. In contrast, Robert Lopez brings a global perspective, weaving abstract forms and modernist interpretations that mirror the ebb and flow of human emotion. Together, their creations form a luminous confluence — a dialogue of waves that transcend borders and artistic idioms.
Surendran Karthyayan — A Journey Through Art and Legacy
Born in Muvattupuzha, Kerala, Surendran Karthyayan has carved a luminous path in the world of Indian art. A graduate of the College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum (1993), his career reflects both dedication and distinction.
Widely exhibited across India in select and juried shows, Surendran’s works have graced State, Regional, and National Akademi exhibitions. His artistry has been recognized with State Awards in 1995 and 2005, alongside a prestigious Research Grant from the Central Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (1993). Beyond accolades, Surendran has enriched the art community through Lalit Kala Akademi Art Camps and numerous solo exhibitions within and beyond Kerala. His journey embodies a rare blend of tradition, innovation, and enduring creative spirit — a testament to the evolving narrative of contemporary Indian art.
Robert Lopez — A Global Voice in Contemporary Art
Robert Lopez, a post-graduate in social sciences and a self-taught artist, has nurtured a lifelong devotion to painting. From his student years onward, he has held twenty solo exhibitions across Kerala and beyond, while also participating in State and National juried shows, as well as exhibitions in the USA and Europe.
His curatorial vision has brought together artists from across continents, with international group shows in India and the USA under VAM Art Inc. Lopez’s journey includes participation in numerous State and National art camps and symposia, alongside acclaimed group exhibitions such as Arma Goes East in the Netherlands, the Euro-Asian Artists Exhibition in New Jersey, and the Small Format Art Show in Amsterdam.
Brief yet profound, his career reflects a rare blend of autodidactic passion and global resonance — a testament to how art can transcend borders and speak in universal tones.
This exhibition is not merely a showcase of recent works; it is a celebration of harmony in diversity, where two distinct artistic voices converse through the language of water — fluid, boundless, and ever-evolving.
