SAAMYA: A Dance Tribute Rooted in Tagore and Kalighat”

Vrindan, New Delhi, brought to Kolkata a rare dance performance titled SAAMYA, where movement and imagery merged into poetry.

Rooted in Rabindranath Tagore’s Chandalika and visualised through the vibrant strokes of the Kalighat painting style, the work unfolded as a living canvas. It reflected on nature’s rhythm, the fragile bond between earth and humankind, and the journey from lush abundance to quiet disruption.

“This is called a production because it moves far beyond a conventional dance repertoire presentation. Irrespective of duration, this is where classical movement meets theatre, storytelling, light, original music, and a dance-drama soliloquy. A coming together of form, concept, and feeling—this is a journey we cannot wait to share. And if you have witnessed this in Delhi, you already know our backstory a little better now.” — Organisers.

Here, Chandalika was reimagined as the Water Girl—the giver, the sustainer, the eternal flow of life. Inspired by Ustaad Zakir Hussain’s soulful rendition Water Girl, the performance became a tribute not only to him but also to our folklore, our origins, and the artistic language of paintings.

It was a celebration of roots and renewal, where dance carried the pulse of heritage into the present moment.
