Thiksey Monastery Ladakh: A Peaceful Himalayan Retreat of Tibetan Buddhism
Thiksey Monastery, rising gracefully on a hilltop near Leh in Ladakh, is a 12-story marvel that mirrors the grandeur of Lhasa’s Potala Palace. Established in the 15th century, this Gelugpa Buddhist monastery is a sanctuary of peace, art and devotion.
Visitors are welcomed by ancient murals, sacred stupas, and the awe-inspiring 15-meter tall statue of Maitreya Buddha—the largest of its kind in Ladakh. The monastery’s vibrant morning prayers, echoing through its assembly halls (Dukhang), offer a rare glimpse into the rhythm of Tibetan Buddhist life.
From its terraces, panoramic views of the Indus Valley unfold like a living painting, while the red and yellow structures cascade down the hillside in harmonious beauty.
