In the quiet embrace of Puducherry, art finds its voice through The Village Call: Rural Landscape Impression, a solo exhibition by Dr. Gopal J—an art educator, researcher, and therapist whose brush captures the soul of rural India. This gathering is more than an exhibition; it is a journey into landscapes that echo with memory, tradition, and the timeless rhythm of village life.

Opening on 27th February 2026 at 6:00 pm, the exhibition invites audiences to immerse themselves in a week-long celebration of rural impressions, running daily until 5th March 2026 at the Puducherry Contemporary Art Gallery, adjacent to the Government Museum. 

Puducherry’s Rural Heritage on Canvas

At the Contemporary Art Gallery in Puducherry, the exhibition– The Village Calls unfolds as a lyrical tribute to the landscapes and traditions of Tamil culture. 

Organized by Kalaimamani Dr. Gopal, the collection of forty paintings evokes the ancient water bodies, sacred shrines, village deities, and ecological rhythms that once defined the villages surrounding Puducherry.

Through on-location studies in places such as Thavalakuppam, Embalam, Mathur, and Auroville, Dr. Gopal captures the authentic spirit of rural life—its philosophical depth, ecological sensitivity, and cultural emotions. Each canvas becomes a meditation on heritage, reminding us of the natural and spiritual wealth gradually fading in modern times.

With over three decades of artistic practice, international recognition, and honors including the Kalaimamani Award and exhibitions at the Lalit Kala Akademi, Dr. Gopal’s work resonates as both personal reflection and collective memory.
