THE SEA & I – EXHIBITION / KIRTI CHANDAK

TASMAI, a Centre for Art & Culture, Pondicherry

“From the age of two, till date with an absence from the city of Pondicherry for eight years, when I travelled for my art education, the sea has been one of my closest companions all through. The Sea I realized plays an important role in my works too.  While celebrating my fiftieth anniversary year I thought of dedicating a body of work to what the sea means to me.

Over the next two months I will be working around the “Sea theme”, and will build up the exhibition, exploring further treasures of these waters,” says Kirtis Chandak, the eminent artist and founder of the TASMAI, a Centre for Art & Culture, Pondicherry.

On 24 February 2022, The Sea & I – Exhibition by Kirti Chandak will be inaugurated to mark the 9th anniversary of the Art and Culture Centre and the fiftieth anniversary of art life of renowned artist and social activist, Kirti Chandak.

For her, life seems to be a ‘apolitical platform where creativity is the password’ and art is the embodiment of self -realisation in a holistic manner, where practice has a ‘self-transformative and community upliftment’.

All the time Sea beacons her, inspires, reverberates, interacts and sometimes energises with the mesmeric cosmic bliss of everlasting existence.

“Through my works, I tried to share a kind of feeling towards nature, towards people and reconnecting one’s inner self.  My work helped me to connect with myself, the environment and shared my feeling with the people,” says Kirti Chandak, who always motivates and keeps focused on portraying and working for the betterment of nature, environment and people.

“Sea influenced me a lot. It’s subtle, infinite love, obviously bonded me with nature.  I am doing a series of work in watercolor and oil on nature,”   she shared on the upcoming ‘50th year retrospect reassessing’ of her own art life.

Kirti Chandak  has graduated from Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education in Pondicherry. She studied Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Viswa-Bharati, Santiniektan and Master of Fine Arts in painting from M.S.University, Baroda.

She has received Junior Fellowship and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.

She was awarded the Late Milinde Kumar Bhade Gold Medal from M.S.University, Baroda for Painting.

Kirti Chandak founded Tasmai, a unique Art and Cultural Centre at Pondicherry to provide a platform for artists and artisans to present their works.
