Supti Bardhan: The Hindustani Classical Vocalist Preserving Tradition Through StudioShivazzz, Kolkata

In the quiet discipline of a raga unfolding note by note lies the essence of Supti Bardhan’s life work. As an accomplished Hindustani Classical Vocalist, Music Educator, Cultural Curator, and the Founder & Director of StudioShivazzz, Kolkata, she occupies a rare space where scholarship, artistry, and mentorship converge.

For over four decades, she has devoted herself to the study, performance, teaching, and promotion of Indian Classical Music — a commitment that has earned her recognition not merely for artistic excellence, but for academic depth and an enduring dedication to nurturing the musicians of tomorrow.

What distinguishes Supti Bardhan’s journey is the balance she strikes between reverence and relevance. She holds fast to the purity of Hindustani Classical Music even as she reimagines its reach — carrying it into contemporary spaces through lecture-demonstrations and digital platforms, ensuring that an ancient tradition continues to speak to modern audiences without ever diluting its essence.

A Professional Profile Rooted in Depth and Range

Recognised as a distinguished Hindustani Classical Vocalist, Supti Bardhan commands an expansive artistic vocabulary spanning Hindustani Classical Vocal Music, Semi-Classical forms, Bhajan, Thumri, Dadra, and Light Classical Music. Her expertise extends well beyond performance alone, encompassing voice culture, harmonium accompaniment, music pedagogy, stage performance, and the curation of cultural events. It is this rare combination — performer, teacher, and cultural custodian — that defines her standing in the field.

Central to her teaching philosophy is a thoughtful synthesis of two worlds: the intimate, time-honoured Guru-Shishya Parampara, and structured academic methodology. This duality allows her students to grow not only as performers capable of holding an audience, but as musicians with a genuine theoretical grasp of the art form they practise.

A MUSICAL JOURNEY SHAPED BY LINEAGE

Music entered Supti Bardhan’s life early, and it never left. Her earliest training was shaped under the loving guidance of her mother and first guru, Smt. Gauri Mazumdar, who first kindled her devotion to Hindustani Classical Music. That early spark grew into rigorous discipline when she became a disciple of the late Pandit Jagdish Prasad, an eminent exponent of the Patiala Gharana, under whom she trained intensively in Khayal Gayaki, voice culture, raga development, and the refined aesthetics of classical singing.

Today, her artistic evolution continues under the mentorship of Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt — a Grammy Awardee and Padma Bhushan recipient — as his Senior Disciple. Under his guidance, she continues to deepen her command of raagdari while actively engaging in workshops, lecture-demonstrations, and musical collaborations. Underlying all of this is a musical philosophy built on three pillars: discipline, devotion, and the conviction that learning never truly ends.

ACADEMIC FOUNDATIONS

Supti Bardhan’s credentials mirror the dual nature of her artistic identity — the analytical and the intuitive. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics alongside a Diploma in Hindustani Classical Vocal Music, and has earned the title of Vidushi from Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh — a recognition reserved for those who have attained genuine mastery in the classical arts.

GURU PARAMPARA: A LINEAGE OF EXCELLENCE

Her musical lineage reads like a map of dedication:

  • Initial Training — Smt. Gauri Mazumdar, under whom the foundation of her musical education was laid
  • Advanced Classical Training — the late Pt. Jagdish Prasad of the Patiala Gharana, whose rigorous instruction covered Khayal, voice culture, raga development, layakari, and classical performance
  • Present Guru — Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Grammy Awardee and Padma Bhushan honouree, under whom she continues to refine her raagdari
  • Senior Disciple — formally recognised by Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt through a Certificate of Recognition acknowledging her dedication, musical maturity, and contribution to Hindustani Classical Music

A CAREER THAT BRIDGED CLASSROOMS AND CONCERT HALLS

Before her full immersion into music education and cultural curation, Supti Bardhan built a substantial career in academic teaching, holding positions as an SST teacher at De Nobili Public School, Dhanbad, and Delhi Public School, NFL, Guna; as an Economics teacher at National Convent School, Gwalior; and as a Co-ordinator at Gwalior Glory School. This background in formal education would later inform the structured, pedagogically sound approach she brings to music instruction.

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt during nationally covered lecture-demonstration programmes, further cementing her presence within India’s classical music discourse.

A Legacy in the Making

From the early lessons learned at her mother’s side to her present standing as Senior Disciple of a Grammy-winning maestro, Supti Bardhan’s story is one of quiet, sustained devotion to an art form that demands nothing less.
