Sharmila Mukerjee – Odissi’s Eternal Flow of Grace

Renowned Odissi dancer and choreographer Sharmila Mukerjee, a devoted disciple of Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, has illuminated the classical stage with her artistry for over four decades.

As the Founder and Artistic Director of Sanjali Centre for Odissi Dance, Bangalore (established in 2004), she has nurtured generations of dancers while carrying forward the timeless legacy of her Guru. Recipient of the Mahari Award, she embodies the discipline and devotion of Odissi with rare elegance.

At sixteen, Sharmila Mukerjee captivated critics as Prakriti in Tagore’s Chandalika, her youthful radiance shimmering across the stage. Since beginning her Odissi training in 1984, she has risen to become a Top Grade Artist of Doordarshan and an Established Artist of ICCR, representing India as a cultural ambassador across continents—from Fiji and Malaysia to Italy and the U.S.A. Her performances and workshops have carried Odissi’s rhythm to audiences in Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Indonesia, Seychelles, Tunisia, Singapore, Bulgaria, the UAE, and many more, weaving a global tapestry of tradition and innovation.

Sharmila Mukerjee – Crafting Odissi with Compassion

Sharmila Mukerjee stands today as an established name in the world of Odissi, celebrated not only for her artistry but also for her vision as a choreographer. Creating her own dance compositions, productions and ballets, she has given Odissi fresh dimensions while remaining rooted in tradition. A dedicated teacher, she has trained countless students and worked extensively with hearing‑impaired children, directing productions that shine with inclusivity and grace.

Her contributions have been recognized with honors such as Singar Mani (1989), the Mahari Award (2016), and the BCKA Kalasreshtha Award (2016) and many more—each a testament to her devotion and impact on Odissi dance.

In 2023–2024, Sharmila Mukerjee became the first Odissi dancer to be honored with the Karnataka Kalashree Award by the Sangeet Nrithya Academy, Government of Karnataka, for her outstanding contribution to Odissi. Her journey—marked by devotion, discipline, and artistry—stands as a luminous testament to the enduring spirit of Odissi, where dance becomes prayer and tradition breathes anew through every graceful movement.

From Chandalika to Sanjali

From the corridors of Loreto House and Presidency College, Kolkata, Sharmila Mukerjee stepped into her destiny—dance. At sixteen, she embodied Chandalika in Tagore’s immortal drama, her grace drawing the gaze of critics and connoisseurs alike. Soon, under the guiding hand of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, she immersed herself in the discipline of Odissi, her Rangapravesh in 1988 blessed by the Guru’s own mardala.

Her journey has been one of creation and vision—scholarship at Michigan, lessons in Abhinaya, and choreographies that reimagine tradition: Hansika, Sookshma, Ramayan, and Tagore’s The Dancer’s Worship

Today, through the Sanjali Centre for Odissi Dance, Bangalore, she nurtures new generations, her annual production Pravaha flowing like a river of heritage, carrying Odissi’s timeless rhythm into the heart of South India.
