Professor Jasminder Kaur of BHU PresentsIndia’s Resist-Dyeing Heritage at the 12th International Shibori Symposium in Basel
WHERE CLOTH MEETS COLOUR AND TRADITION MEETS TOMORROW, INDIA FOUND A GRACEFUL VOICE IN SWITZERLAND.
Professor Jasminder Kaur, Dean of the Faculty of Visual Arts and Head of the Department of Painting at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), took part in the 12th International Shibori Symposium (12ISS) at the Museum der Kulturen Basel from 25 to 28 September 2026.
Organised by the World Shibori Network Foundation, the symposium gathered designers, textile artists, researchers and entrepreneurs from across the world, all united by the art of Shibori and resist dyeing.
Professor Kaur presented her paper, “Resist Dyeing Traditions of India and Their Sustainability,” celebrating the cultural richness of India’s dyeing heritage and the need to preserve it responsibly.
On day two, she joined a panel on how academic institutions can nurture traditional Indian textiles, sharing the Textile Design Section’s student-led work in documentation, innovation and hands-on exploration.
Her textile works were also displayed at the International Textile Fair, giving global audiences a glimpse of India’s living craft traditions.
A Gold Medalist and former Deputy Director of Bharat Kala Bhavan, Professor Kaur has long championed craft revival and women artisans.
Since 2007 at BHU, Dr. Jasminder Kaur has woven seventeen years of teaching with sixteen years of artistry in carpets, brocade, and print. Her research revives block‑printing traditions, her projects empower rural women, and her workshops kindle skill and innovation.
With ten solo shows, forty group exhibitions, and thirty scholarly writings, she bridges academia and design across India and abroad.
Honored by the Ministry of Textiles at Lakmé Fashion Week, invited to the Prime Minister’s Box, and recognized by Lalit Kala Akademi, she stands as a voice of preservation and renewal.
A life member of INTACH and the Art History Congress, Dr. Kaur continues to shape India’s textile and craft heritage with vision and grace.
“I sincerely thank Banaras Hindu University for giving me the opportunity to carry India’s textile story to the world stage. Through this platform, I was able to present my research and share the timeless heritage of our traditional crafts with an international audience.” — Dr. Jasminder Kaur
In every thread she carries across borders, Professor Kaur reminds the world that India’s heritage is not merely preserved, but beautifully lived.
