POURNAMIKAVU, A DEVOTIONAL VISTAAN ILLUSTRATED COFFEE TABLE BOOK

Parshottam K  Rupala , Hon. Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India released the book – ‘Pournamikavu, A Devotional Vista’, a unique pictorial depiction by Gireesh G V, nationally-acclaimed artist and photographer on 4 April 2023 at Pournamikavu Temple, Thiruvananthapuram.

Here in Pournamikavu, situated at Venganoor, Thiruvananthapuram, Shri. Bala Tripura Sundari Devi is worshipped and the temple opens only on the full moon (Pournami) day and on some special occasions like Navaaham Festival and on Vidyarambham days. It is also known as ‘Akshara Devatha’ temple where all the 51 idols of Akshara devathas and about 25 sub-deities were worshipped.

“Here is a pictorial depiction of the unique history, practices and tradition of the legendary Pournamikvau, the shrine that is open to its devotees only on full moon days in Venganoor near Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram.

This illustrated coffee-table book is the result of granular research, many painstaking hours of patience and passion while soaking up the reverential moods of the divine and devotees over more than a year,” says renowned artist Gireesh G V.

Gireesh G V is a nationally-acclaimed documentary-photographer whose eye for detail brings alive these pictures spread over 200 pages.

The renowned artist and photographer Gireesh G V  now lives in Thiruvananthapuram and  started his career as news and features photographer, worked with many leading publications including India Today, Outlook, Forbes and contributed to the Wall Street Journal Mint and Life Positive in various capacities.

He has published many works internationally in Time and Newsweek Magazines and participated in many projects.

“A treat, a tribute and above all, an offering. Every full moon day I visited the temple and followed the story, for the last one and half years, for this project,” says the artist.

“A book to delve into the mighty majesty of the Goddess – The book amply succeeds in its attempt to blend bhakti of devotees with the shakti of the goddess,” he added.

Parshottam K  Rupala , Hon. Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India released the book – Pournamikavu, A Devotional Vista, by presenting a copy of the book to S. Somanath, Chairman ISRO, Thiruvananthapuram at Pournamikavu Temple on 4th April 2023. Gopinath Nair, former ISRO photographer received a copy of the book from S. Somanath, Chairman ISRO at the function.
