“Chitrangada” is a dance drama by Rabindranath Tagore, inspired by the story of a warrior princess from the great epic, Mahabharata. It follows Chitrangada, the princess of Manipur, as she transforms from a warrior to a feminine lover to win Arjuna’s heart. The drama highlights themes of self-identity, gender roles and empowerment. Chitrangada realizes that true love doesn’t require changing who she is. She ultimately reveals her true self to Arjuna, not just as a delicate woman but as a powerful warrior with strength and integrity.
“Nigamsudha is showcasing this dance production as an adaptation of Rabindranath’s Chitrangada using Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak and creative dance forms. Some songs are kept in Bengali, originally written by Rabindradranath Tagore and most of the songs are adapted in the form of dialogues in English language for common understanding,” says renowned artist Madhuri Sarkar.
