Lula Wins Fourth Term as Brazil’s President: A Historic Comeback in the 2026 Brazil Election
Brazil has chosen its president once more, and the answer is Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The 80-year-old leader of the Workers’ Party won the 25 October runoff with about 51.8% of valid votes against 48.2% for Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, and his new term begins on January 5, 2027.
It was a remarkable turnaround. Bolsonaro had won the first round on October 4 with 47.03% to Lula’s 45.16%, a result that surprised pollsters. Lula is now the first Brazilian president since the return to democracy to win four presidential elections by direct popular vote. His winning margin was about 4.4 million votes.
After the win, Lula said Brazil wants relations with other nations on equal terms and will not become dependent on the United States.
The result is not without dispute. Bolsonaro, 45, plans to challenge the outcome in court over a nationwide extension of voting hours, although his own Liberal Party has recognised the result.
For supporters, it was a night of celebration.
For Brazil, the work of governing a closely divided nation begins again.
