In Dialogue, Across Time: A Teacher-Student Artistic Reunion at Bikaner House

At the heart of New Delhi’s cultural calendar this September lies “In Dialogue, Across Time”—a poignant and visually rich exhibition presented by Dhoomimal Gallery and curated by Archana Khare-Ghose.

From 19th to 25th September 2025 at Bikaner House, this unique showcase brings together the legendary Anupam Sud and her former student Harshdeep Kaur in a rare intergenerational conversation through art.

Anupam Sud, revered as the “first lady of Indian printmaking,” shaped decades of artistic thought at the College of Art, Delhi, while Harshdeep Kaur, a graduate of the same institution, now emerges as a compelling voice exploring identity, spirituality and portraiture. Their bond, rooted in reverence and nurtured through shared experiences, transcends the traditional teacher-student dynamic, evolving into a dialogue of mutual inspiration.

The exhibition unveils Sud’s delicate watercolours—an intimate facet of her practice—alongside Kaur’s contemporary expressions, creating a space where legacy and innovation meet in quiet harmony.

Echoes of Influence, Voices of Independence

In “In Dialogue, Across Time”, curator Archana Khare-Ghose orchestrates a rare artistic symphony—where mentorship blossoms into mutual expression and two distinct creative paths intertwine without merging.

Anupam Sud’s watercolours, delicate and fluid, reveal a quieter side of her celebrated draughtsmanship, offering viewers a glimpse into the intimacy of her line and form beyond the boldness of her printmaking. In graceful counterpoint, Harshdeep Kaur’s works—rooted in Sikh spirituality and the human experience—span mediums and moods, from acrylics to Chinese ink, each piece a meditation on identity and emotion. Her portrait of Sud, marked “NFS” (Not For Sale), stands as a testament to reverence and artistic kinship. Yet what elevates this exhibition is not homage, but harmony. Kaur’s voice, though shaped by Sud’s legacy, speaks with its own cadence—bold, introspective, and unmistakably hers.

As Khare-Ghose aptly notes, “The teacher does not overshadow the student; instead, their works stand as equals,” inviting us into a layered conversation where influence becomes inspiration, and tradition meets transformation.

Threads of Reverence — Where Art Becomes Conversation

“To be shown alongside Anupam-ji is not just an honour—it’s a quiet challenge, a mirror, and a moment of becoming. It has made me dig deeper into my own practice, and gifted me the courage to stand beside my inspiration.” — Harshdeep Kaur

“Art has its own language, and sometimes, it finds harmony between two voices. Harshdeep and I discovered that rhythm long ago—this exhibition is simply its echo.” — Anupam Sud

THESE REFLECTIONS AREN’T JUST QUOTES—THEY’RE BRUSHSTROKES OF A RELATIONSHIP BUILT ON RESPECT, GROWTH AND THE SILENT POWER OF SHARED VISION.
