Heritage Harmony – A Musical Tribute to Swami Vivekananda
On January 25, the Ramakrishna Mission, Gurugram, in collaboration with Legends of India, presented Heritage Harmony, an evocative evening of Hindustani classical music commemorating the 163rd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
The highlight of the programme was a soulful recital by Pandit Dishari Chakraborty, one of the foremost exponents of the rare Shatatantri Veena. Beginning with an elaborate alap, jod and jhala in Raga Bhimpalasri, rendered in the dignified Senia Dhrupad tradition, Pandit Chakraborty unfolded each phrase with meditative calm, allowing the ancient instrument to breathe with timeless resonance.
The recital reached its spiritual zenith with “Nahi Surya Nahi Jyoti…,” Swami Vivekananda’s cherished composition in Raga Bageshri and Jhap Taal, a piece historically sung by Vivekananda himself in the presence of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Rabindranath Tagore. His rendering, marked by reverence and emotional intensity, was enriched by Pandit Manmohan Nayak’s powerful yet sensitive pakhawaj accompaniment and the steady, immersive drone of the tanpura by Dreamy Nice, together weaving an atmosphere of heritage, harmony, and devotion.
Following the performance, Maharaj Shantatmanandaji, Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission, Gurugram, honored the artists with shawls and books authored by Swami Vivekananda, a gesture steeped in reverence and tradition. The evening’s aura was further enriched by the presence of Shri Kartikeya Vashisht, the accomplished flautist, and Shri Alick Sengupta, a distinguished Hindustani classical vocalist, whose participation added depth to the cultural gathering.
