HELLO BROOKLYN! TECHSPRESSIONISM 2024
THE KINGSBOROUGH ART MUSEUM IS DELIGHTED TO PRESENT “HELLO, BROOKLYN!” // TECHSPRESSIONISM 2024, A GROUP EXHIBITION OF RENOWNED TECHSPRESSIONIST ARTISTS ALL OVER THE WORLD.
This years’ International Techspressionist Exhibition – HELLO BROOKLYN! TECHSPRESSIONISM 2024 curated by renowned artists Tommy Mintz, Seungjin Lee, Oceana Andres and Giovanna Sun will showcase exquisite artworks of eminent International artists on 7 August 2024 till 25 September 2024.
Sponsored by PSC-CUNY, the Kingsborough Art Museum will display the exhibition and an opening reception will be held on Friday, 9 August 2024 from 5.00 to 7.00 PM.
The innovative International exhibition reflecting the expressive potential of more than 100 Techspressionist artists of more than 45 countries will share their emotional experience and discuss ideas related to art and technology. It is also a widely used hashtag on social media, used on over 75K Instagram posts by artists worldwide since 2021.
Eminent artist Colin Goldberg coined the term ‘Techspressionism’ in 2011. During the pandemic, Goldberg began developing this idea into a global community of digital artists in collaboration with art historian Helen A. Harrison and fellow artists Steve Miller, Patrick Lichty and Oz Van Rosen.
“I believe that the computer, and technology in general, are not separate from humankind, but are a natural extension of us. Technology is a continuum which is as old as humanity, not a novelty or fad, and the computer is just one of a long string of tools which have enabled human expression, including the typewriter, the camera, the printing press, the pen, the pencil, and paint,” Colin Goldberg explains.
Helen Harrison adds, “The search for effective means of visualizing subjective, intangible content goes back to the early 20th-century expressionists. Jackson Pollock and his generation took it to new levels of abstraction. The Techspressionists […] are carrying it forward, using innovative tools and techniques to communicate their personal visions […] Techspressionist imagery generates its own aura, deriving its authenticity from the artist’s intention.”
“One thing that I like about Techspressionism is that as a term, it can transcend boundaries…. Techspressionism already fulfills an important function if there are artists aligning themselves with that term and finding a platform to discuss issues that are relevant to their work,” Christiane Paul, Curator of Digital Art at the Whitney Museum also explains.
“Since its inception, the community has progressed to develop both online and physical exhibitions. These have included a large group show in 2022 at the Southampton Arts Center, Southampton, New York and now the first museum exhibition of Techspressionist artworks here at the Kingsborough Art Museum in Brooklyn. This exhibition aims to inspire students at Kingsborough Community College and beyond with new ideas of art and the expressive possibilities of technology. The show encompasses prints, paintings, on-screen artwork, Augmented Reality, sculpture, and live performances made by a diverse range of artists who identify with the community of Techspressionism,” says Associate Professor Tommy Mintz, Exhibition Curator.
