Gaudiya Nritya Shines at Indian Museum Kolkata: Dr. Mahua Mukherjee & Ayan Mukherjee Honor Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra’s Centenary

Kolkata’s Indian Museum turns into a stage of legacy and grace on 13th–14th September, as Diksha Manjari, a unit of Dona Ganguly, presents a special tribute celebrating 100 years of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra’s birth. At the heart of this celebration are guest artists Dr. Mahua Mukherjee and her son Ayan Mukherjee, performing the revivalist classical dance form Gaudiya Nritya.

Dr. Mahua Mukherjee, a retired professor and former Dean of Fine Arts at Rabindra Bharati University, has spent decades reviving Gaudiya Nritya alongside her husband Amitava Mukherjee since the 1980s. A Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Oklahoma, USA and former Tagore Chair Professor at Dhaka University, she has trained under legendary gurus across Chhow, Kirtan, and Abhinaya traditions.

Her contributions span 20 books, 180+ articles, and features in national documentaries — earning her titles like Gaud Deshi Nayaki and honors from EZCC, FICCI-FLO, and Sattriya circles in Guwahati any many more.

Joining her is Ayan Mukherjee — engineer, MBA, sitarist, and accomplished Gaudiya Nritya performer in his own right, holding national scholarships, patents, and the Dr. Manmohan Ghosh Gold Medal.

Together, mother and son bring alive a dance form rooted in Bengal’s temple traditions, honoring a Guru whose artistry continues to inspire generations.
