Pandit Suresh Gandharv and a Lifetime of Sādhanā

A story crafted by Pandit Dishari Chakraborty — Versatile Musician | Educator | Researcher | Music Director | Filmmaker, New Delhi

In the tradition of Hindustani classical music, an artist’s identity is never shaped by awards, prestigious stages, or titles alone. It is shaped by sādhanā — by rigorous riyaaz, by sensitivity to swara, and by the quiet struggles of an ordinary life lived in pursuit of an extraordinary art. The musical journey of Pandit Suresh Gandharv is precisely such a story: one of unbroken discipline and an unwavering love for music.

With the announcement that the Government of India has selected Pandit Suresh Gandharv for the President’s Award, a decades-long journey of dedication and steadfast commitment has finally received national recognition. This honour is not merely a formal acknowledgement of an artist’s achievements. It is recognition of the years of discipline, of the hours of riyaaz that no audience ever witnessed, of personal struggle, and of a devotion to music that never wavered. For an artist who chose music as his life’s path despite numerous challenges in his formative years, this national honour carries a profoundly significant meaning.

The Years Before the Applause

An important aspect of his journey is that, in his early years, not everyone around him was able to fully understand his musical talent or recognise what it might one day become. At a time when choosing classical music as the principal pursuit of one’s life was far from easy, Suresh Gandharv refused to compromise with his circumstances. Amid economic, social, and family challenges, he continued his sādhanā with quiet determination — embracing music not as a profession, but as a lifelong spiritual and artistic discipline.

At eleven, Suresh Gandharv’s journey found its compass—awarded the National Talent Search Scholarship, he embraced sādhanā as life’s axis. Rooted in Haryana’s folk soil yet soaring in rāgadārī skies, he rose to AIR’s Top Grade, founding Taan Tarang Sabha to nurture voices both seasoned and new.

At a decisive turning point in his musical life, Suresh Gandharv adopted the Indore Gharana tradition of Ustad Amir Khan Sahib as the foundation of his path of sādhanā, receiving training from Prof. R. S. Bisht, a senior disciple of Amir Khan Sahib. Re-disciplining an established style of singing, and assimilating in its place the profound raga development of khayal, vilambit laya, swara contemplation, the intricate architecture of Merukhand, and the aesthetic principles of Amir Khani gayaki, became a long and demanding process of dedicated practice.

His voice carries the soil of Haryana—folk rhythms woven into scholarly pursuit. Topping his M.Phil. At Delhi University, he deepened research on the folk music of Haryana. Emerging from the soil of Haryana and establishing a distinctive identity on the national musical stage, he is recognised today as a devoted practitioner and torchbearer of the Amir Khani style of vocal music — the profound rāgadārī of the Indore Gharana, with its expansive vilambit laya, its meditative unfolding of the raga, and its uncompromising demand for inner stillness.

The Faith That Held the Music

While his achievements were rooted in his own hard work and resolve, his family life was sustained by the steadfast support of a companion who understood his musical journey and encouraged him to walk it.

His life partner, Mrs. Poonam Gandharv, has stood beside him since the very beginning. Though she herself has been associated with the administration of a reputed school, she always attached special importance to Suresh Ji’s musical sādhanā. For her, his success was never merely a matter of personal achievement — it was a deeply held aspiration to see his artistic discipline reach its highest potential. Alongside the practical responsibilities of family life, she provided the support and emotional strength that allowed him to give himself more fully to his music.

An artist’s sādhanā is not created in the few hours spent on stage. Behind every performance lie the patience, the sacrifice, and the faith of those who stand beside the artist. In this sense, Poonam Gandharv’s support represents an essential — if quieter — chapter in Suresh Gandharv’s musical life. Her encouragement gave him the strength to remain committed to rigorous riyaaz, to musical study, and to the deeper pursuit of his art.

“A cultured and refined voice, a systematic and imaginative unfolding of the raga, rare applications of Merukhand, subtle swara combinations, and a presentation of exceptional poise — these are the marks of his singing today.”

“His singing carries the profound seriousness of the Amir Khani style, where intellect and emotional sensitivity are not in conflict but beautifully integrated. This is what one would rightly call the Grand style of Amir Khani gayaki.”

A Milestone & A Dream Fulfilled

Seen from this perspective, the President’s Award marks not only an important milestone in an artistic career, but a significant moment in a life shaped by dedication to sādhanā, by the unwavering faith of a life partner, and by an enduring love for music. A journey that began amid struggle has now arrived at national recognition.

This honour, therefore, is not merely a recognition of Pandit Suresh Gandharv’s talent, his rigorous riyaaz, and his dedication to the Amir Khani tradition. It also fulfils the dream of the life partner who continued to believe in his music through the most difficult years of his journey.

From the folk soil of Haryana to the profound rāgadārī of the Indore Gharana — this is an inspiring testament to sādhanā, self-respect, and unwavering determination in the world of Indian classical music.
