Feeling Bombay, One Canvas at a Time

SOME CITIES ARE SEEN. BOMBAY IS FELT.

In “emotions of (BOM)bay”, artist Swati Goel paints the city’s inner world: the hum of crowded local trains, the restless streets, and the quiet hush of the sea. Here, ambition meets fatigue, strangers share fleeting glances, and the coastline offers a moment to breathe, reflect and let go.

With Emotions of (BOM)bay, the artist turns toward the city’s inner pulse—its rhythms, relationships, and restless spaces. Bombay is not merely seen; it is felt. It is a city of movement and contradiction, resilience and tenderness, longing and dreams.

For artist Swati, maps and monuments cannot contain Bombay. Its essence lies in the everyday—the crowded trains, the restless streets, the quiet expanse of the sea. The city is absorbed, carried within, its emotional character revealed through the lives of those who inhabit it.

Her works capture urgency and forward motion: the trains where ambition and fatigue collide, where fleeting encounters between strangers become shared experiences. Yet this energy is tempered by stillness—the coastline, where the sea opens into reflection, vulnerability, and release.

Bombay’s contrasts emerge vividly: skyscrapers beside crowded lanes, prosperity alongside hardship, struggle softened by unexpected generosity. Rather than a single perspective, Emotions of (BOM)bay embraces these contradictions, affirming them as the very fabric of the city’s identity.

“The monsoon forms another important emotional layer within the exhibition. Rain transforms the city’s colours, rhythms and routines, bringing disruption as well as beauty. Through this changing atmosphere, Bombay emerges as a city that continually adapts and finds its rhythm again,” says the artist.

And then there is romance: late-night conversations, cutting chai, rain-soaked roads and the glow of streetlights, where love and chaos share the same sky.

In her seventh solo exhibition, Swati invites us to see Bombay not as a destination, but as an emotional encounter, where exhaustion and excitement, loneliness and belonging, despair and hope all coexist.
