Dr. Mahua Mukherjee: The Living Flame of Gaudiya Nritya
In the sacred rhythm of Bengal’s soil, few names shine as luminously as Dr. Mahua Mukherjee — the scholar-artist who breathed new life into Gaudiya Nritya, the classical dance form once nearly forgotten by time.
Her journey began under the guidance of two extraordinary souls: Padmashree Gambhir Singh Muda, the legendary flame of Chhau from the forests of Ayodhya Hill, and later Guru Mukundadas Bhattacharya, the tireless custodian of Bengal’s folk traditions. From them, she inherited not mere technique, but a living inheritance — the myths, masks, and melodies that pulse through Bengal’s cultural veins.
Of her first Guru, whose masked artistry once enchanted royal courts and foreign shores, Dr. Mahua Mukherjee reflects with quiet awe:
“His command over the Chhau tradition, and the depth of storytelling in every stance and mask, was unlike anything I had encountered. Learning from him shaped my understanding of Bengal’s living dance heritage.”
Guru Mukundadas Bhattacharya, meanwhile, opened doors to forgotten folk forms gathered from countless village journeys. Dr. Mahua Mukherjee:
“Guruji opened my eyes to forms like Ojha Dance, Bou Naach, and Dhamail — the very roots from which Gaudiya Nritya draws its richness.”
A retired professor and former Dean at Rabindra Bharati University, Fulbright Visiting Professor at Oklahoma, and Tagore Chair Professor in Dhaka, Dr. Mukherjee has worn the mantles of scholar, performer, and torchbearer with equal grace. Author of nearly 20 books, mentor to over 50 scholars, and recipient of honors from the Jagatram Award to the Raseshwar Saikia Barbayan Sattriya Award (2024) — her life is a testament to devotion married with discipline.
Immortalized in poetry by Tanure Ojaide and captured on film in documentaries like Dance of God and Gaudiya Nritya — Golden Glory, she remains far more than a dancer. She is the keeper of a sacred rhythm — one that, through her, continues to breathe with divine grace.
