Divine Dance Tribute: Purushottam Shri Ram Enchants Kolkata
LAST MONTH, THE CULTURAL HEART OF KOLKATA WITNESSED A SOUL-STIRRING CELEBRATION OF DEVOTION AND DANCE AT THE NRITYA GATHA FESTIVAL 2025.
Held on October 24th at G. D. Birla Sabhagar, presented by Kalamandalam Kolkata, the evening unfolded with “Purushottam Shri Ram,” a mesmerizing performance blending Bharatanatyam and Mohiniattam. Conceptualized and choreographed by Kalamandalam Swarnadeepa, the production brought alive the timeless virtues of Lord Ram through graceful movement and evocative storytelling.
Scripted by Sri Debopam Das and narrated in Hindi by Sri Rakesh Kumar Tripathy, the performance was presented with elegance by Soumit Kutty.
Organized jointly by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kolkata and the G. L. Mehta Foundation, the event drew art lovers from across the city, leaving behind echoes of divinity and dance in every heart.
In a brief yet breathtaking retelling of the Rāmāyaṇa, the production traced Śrī Rāma’s journey from divine birth to victory over Rāvaṇa. What made it unforgettable was how everyday bhajans—like Shri Ramachandra Kripalu Bhajamana and Thumak Chalat Ramachandra—were transformed into glowing moments of dance and faith. Each step, each note, felt like sacred storytelling. The audience left with the feeling that the epic had danced before their eyes.
Swarnadeepa: Weaving Tradition with Global Grace
A National Scholarship Awardee and proud alumna of Kerala Kalamandalam, Swarnadeepa blends the grace of Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi with a global spirit. Her performances and workshops—from Europe to Qatar—reflect a deep love for classical art. Through her academy, Nrityabritti Batayan in Durgapur, she nurtures new talent and recently hosted the region’s only classical festival, the 6th Durgapur Dance and Music Festival.
