Badami – Timeless Treasure of Rock and History

Nestled in the heart of Bagalkot district, Badami is a quiet marvel where history whispers through red sandstone cliffs and the gentle ripples of Agastya Lake. Once the capital of the Chalukyas, this heritage town invites all to wander through ancient cave temples carved in stone—each a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture from the 6th and 7th centuries. The air still carries echoes of old markets and sacred chants, while every sculpture and pillar tells a story of devotion.

Badami is a place where the past breathes through cliffs and carvings.

Its cave temples, the earliest known examples of hindu temples in the Deccan region sculpted into red rock in the 6th and 7th centuries, reveal divine tales of Shiva, Vishnu and Mahavira in stone.

Above them, Badami Fort watches over the town, its ancient walls and hidden chambers echoing royal memories. From its heights, the view is pure magic—temples, lakes and rugged terrain stretching into time.

For trekkers and dreamers alike, Badami offers both challenge and charm, with nearby wonders like Hampi and Pattadakal completing the journey through Karnataka’s timeless soul.

Part of the UNESCO World Heritage cluster “Evolution of Temple Architecture – Aihole-Badami-Pattadakal,” the Badami Caves lie in Malaprabha valley, known as the cradle of temple design. Just 142 km from Belagavi and 140 km northwest of Hampi, these ancient rock-cut sanctuaries are a timeless tribute to India’s architectural brilliance.
