Larissa Noury’s Solo Exhibition in Tokyo Fuses French Impressionism with Japanese Washi Paper
Tokyo’s Ginza district turns luminous this October as Vent Ginza Gallery hosts “Exploring Color with a New French Impressionism and Japanese Washi Paper,” a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed painter, architect and colorist Larissa Noury.
The show is a quiet collision of two artistic worlds — the poetic color sensibility of French Impressionism and the centuries-old artisanship of Japanese washi paper. Noury, who holds doctorates in art and architecture, calls her practice “New Impressionism”: a tactile, almost sculptural approach where pigment doesn’t just sit on a surface but merges into the living fibers of mulberry paper itself.
In her practice, Larissa Noury reimagines the legacy of the Impressionist masters through a distinctly contemporary lens — one attuned to spatial perception and the quiet energy of color. Her compositions do not merely depict light; they capture its movement, its reflections, its vibrations within matter, in pursuit of a visual harmony where every nuance answers a spatial and poetic frequency. Central to this vision is her symbiosis with washi paper, used not as a passive support but as a living medium — absorbing, diffusing, and refracting light in ways no traditional canvas allows, lending her work a tactile depth and contemplative stillness. In this fusion, France and Japan meet in silent dialogue, two traditions of excellence united by their reverence for light, nature, and the ephemeral.
Larissa Noury is an international artist whose doctorates in art and architecture inform every brushstroke — a rare fusion she carries as founding president of the Couleur-Espace-Culture association. Her signature style weaves haute couture, painting, and the architecture of color into a language entirely her own, earning her a steady presence in galleries and museums worldwide. Drawing inspiration from Monet, Turner, and Renoir, she has forged what she calls “New Impressionism” — a tactile, immersive practice that layers relief, texture, and luminous reflection to capture the invisible.
