Bengal’s Terracotta Temples: Stories Baked in Clay

Long before galleries and gilded frames, Bengal told its stories in clay.

On Tuesday, 22 September 2026, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, presents an evening dedicated to Bengal’s extraordinary terracotta temple heritage, as part of the Sanskriti Lecture Series.

At the heart of it is renowned photographer Sanjay Das, who has spent nearly 14 years travelling across Bengal, documenting its landscapes, people, traditions, crafts and, above all, its remarkable terracotta temples. His lens has created a visual archive of a rich heritage that is slowly vanishing.

The evening will also mark the launch of his book, Terracotta Temples of Bengal, conceived and photographed by Sanjay Das, with text by Subhra Mazumdar, published by Niyogi Books.

Artists, scholars, cultural voices and representatives of IGNCA and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture will gather to celebrate a legacy that still whispers from temple walls.
