DR. JANAK JHANKAR NARZARY — celebrated sculptor, art historian and one of India’s most versatile creative minds — has unveiled his latest creation, “Seeds and Life,” an earth sculpture that speaks in the ancient language of soil, growth and renewal.

For an artist whose career has spanned continents and decades, this piece is more than a sculptural gesture; it is a meditation on origins. Dr. Narzary hails from the Bodo tribe of Assam, among the autochthonous communities of Northeast India, and his roots trace back to Hatimatha — known in earlier times as Mwiderkhoro — a village in Kokrajhar District within the Bodoland Territorial Region. That deep connection to land and lineage now finds quiet echo in a Taiwanese nature park thousands of miles from home, where “Seeds and Life” invites viewers to contemplate the fragile, persistent force of germination itself.

His journey began in Kokrajhar, Assam, before carrying him to Guwahati University for his Bachelor’s degree, and onward to Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, where he earned his BFA in sculpture in 1971.

From there, his pursuit of mastery took him to MS University, Baroda, for an MFA, and eventually across the ocean to Boston University, where a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship opened doors to advanced studies in art history. His scholarly ambitions culminated in a Ph.D. from Visva Bharati in 1989, anchored by pioneering research into the antecedents of modern Indian sculpture.

This academic foundation, built on merit scholarships and national fellowships alike, has been matched by extraordinary recognition on the global stage.

From the International Award in Dhaka (2019) to the International Sculpture Symposium award in Beijing (2021), and a string of national honors spanning decades, Dr. Narzary’s accolades trace the arc of a scholar-artist whose intellect and craftsmanship have shaped institutions and inspired generations well beyond the walls of any single university.
