Sezhian Ilamourougane: The Young Visual Artist Redefining Instinctive Art Through Primal Vision

For Sezhian Ilamourougane, art was never a discovery — it was inheritance.

Raised in a household where painting lived quietly alongside daily life, guided by his grandfather, father, brother, and elder relatives, he grew up believing that creation was as ordinary and essential as returning home each evening.

That quiet beginning matured into disciplined pursuit. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at Bharathiar Palkalaikoodam (2017–2021) and his Master of Fine Arts in Painting at Alagappa University (2021–2023), shaped along the way by mentors Professor Sekar and Stubert Sibi, whose perspectives on artistic life and vision left a lasting imprint.

But Sezhian’s true signature lies not in technique alone — it lies in emotional truth. He does not begin with a subject; he begins with feeling. Love, anger, sorrow, vulnerability, and conflict move first through him, then onto the surface. This pursuit of authenticity eventually led him to Instinctive Drawing — a practice free of visual reference, where memory and emotion are allowed to surface as line and gesture. From this exploration emerged Primal Vision, his evolving artistic philosophy rooted in instinct, memory, and lived experience.

His acclaimed work Silent Bodies embodies this philosophy — an attempt to hold what words cannot express: the unspoken weight of human experience. The piece also reflects his experimental material practice, incorporating processed seed matter ground into powder and built into textured surfaces, alongside his continuing work in oil, acrylic, and pastel.

An Associate Member of Artists for Conservation (AFC), Sezhian’s connection to nature runs parallel to his artistic evolution, reinforcing his growing fascination with organic materials and ecological themes.

His journey has been marked by meaningful recognition, including selection for the prestigious 65th National Exhibition of Art, alongside numerous group exhibitions.

In September 2025, he stepped into a new chapter with his first solo exhibition — a milestone that marks not an arrival, but the continuation of an artist still listening closely to instinct.

For Sezhian Ilamourougane, art is never merely a practice — it is sustenance. In moments of hurt, it becomes his voice; in moments of collapse, it becomes his courage to begin again. He speaks of it with a tenderness that borders on the maternal, as though his art were a mother who carries, nurtures, and continues to hold him through every season of growth.

This same spirit of care extends into his role as an art educator, where working closely with young minds has taught him to see creativity anew — through curiosity, instinct, and the endless, unrepeatable ways a child perceives the world. Teaching, for him, is not separate from art; it is a mirror that continually reshapes his own artistic understanding.

“Art gives me the strength to speak when I have been hurt, the courage to create when I feel broken, and the ability to rise and begin again — much like a mother who carries, nurtures and helps her child grow, my art continues to do the same for me.”
Sezhian Ilamourougane

For Sezhian, art is not just his voice — it is his becoming.
