Vizhinjam International Seaport Begins Full-Scale EXIM Operations, Marking a New Chapter in India’s Maritime Trade

Kerala’s coastline wrote a new chapter in India’s maritime history today, as Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan flagged off the first export container at Vizhinjam International Seaport, officially launching full-scale export-import operations. The ceremony, marked the port’s transformation from a pure transshipment hub into a full-fledged global commercial trade gateway.

Nestled on the southern tip of India, barely 10 nautical miles from the busy East-West international shipping corridor, Vizhinjam has long been regarded as a natural deepwater marvel — its 23 to 27-metre depths capable of berthing the giant Mother Vessels that most Indian ports simply cannot accommodate. With plans for 30 berths, twin breakwaters, and an eventual handling capacity of 4.1 million TEUs annually, the port is poised to rival global giants like Colombo, Singapore and Dubai.

Today’s milestone is more than ceremonial — it signals India’s ambition to reclaim cargo currently routed through foreign transshipment hubs, potentially drawing in nearly half of the 20,000 vessels that traverse the Suez Canal each year. Economists estimate the shift could save the nation over $100 million annually in foreign exchange, while positioning Kerala at the heart of a new era in global trade.

As the first container rolled through Vizhinjam’s gates, it carried with it more than goods — it carried the promise of a self-reliant, globally connected India.
