Caracas Trembles, Hope Persists
Two fierce quakes, 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela within seconds, tearing through Caracas and La Guaira on a national holiday. Buildings crumbled, voices rose from beneath the ruins, and rescuers pressed on through dust and despair.
The toll is heavy—at least 235 lives lost, more than 1,500 injured, countless left homeless. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency, as grief shadows the capital and fear drives families into the streets.
Yet amid devastation, pledges of solidarity arrive. Nations extend hands, the United States offering $150 million and rapid relief forces.
