Sobha Devi R V — Nurturing Dance in the Andamans

Born in 1977 amidst the serene beauty of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sobha Devi R V has blossomed into a devoted Bharatanatyam and semi-classical dance teacher, choreographer and performer.

With over a decade of guiding young talents, she continues to shape the rhythm of tradition while mentoring the next generation of dancers.

At the heart of her journey stands Daksh Dance Academy (DDA) in Port Blair, a sanctuary where discipline meets devotion, and every student becomes a torchbearer of heritage. Her artistry is not only performance but pedagogy—an unbroken dialogue between tradition and innovation.

“Dance has been a constant part of my life. The more I teach, the more I learn, and all the time, every student inspires me to continue this journey.” — Sobha Devi R V

Her words echo the essence of her path: a teacher forever a student, a performer forever a seeker, carrying the timeless flame of Bharatanatyam into the future with grace and humility.

Sobha Devi R V — A Journey in Rhythm and Grace

From the tender age of ten, under the guidance of Guru Sree Kala and Satish Kumar, Sobha Devi R V stepped into the world of Bharatanatyam and semi-classical dance. Her school years were adorned with a five-year training course, balanced with formal education, and enriched by performances in local cultural programmes.

Marriage did not pause her rhythm; instead, it marked a new beginning. In 2010, she embraced her role as a teacher, nurturing young dancers with discipline and devotion. Since then, her artistry has flourished through choreography, training, and stage performances, resonating across state-level cultural events in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Her journey is both personal and collective—an unbroken dialogue between tradition and the aspirations of her students.

“Teaching dance has been an important part of my life. Each step I share with my students is a step closer to keeping our heritage alive.” — Sobha Devi R V

Selected by the Department of Art and Culture, Sobha Devi R V carried the spirit of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to Delhi, performing for two consecutive years and embodying the cultural heritage of her home. Her artistry has graced programmes organized by institutions such as Island Tourism Festival ( ITF)–month long tourism festival showcasing the heritage and diversity of the Andamans, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT), and numerous state-level festivals, each stage becoming a testament to her devotion.

With over a decade of experience as a dance teacher, choreographer and performer, she continues to nurture Bharatanatyam and semi-classical traditions, mentoring young dancers and guiding them into the luminous world of Indian classical art. Her journey is one of dedication—where teaching, choreography and performance merge into a single rhythm of service to culture.

“Every performance is a prayer, every student a promise—together we keep the rhythm of heritage alive,” says Sobha Devi.
