Swarnanjali: Legacy of Bandishes – A Timeless Offering to Hindustani Classical Music

In the ever-flowing river of Hindustani classical music, Pandit Bhutnath De shines as a luminous source, nurturing generations with his voice and wisdom. Even at the age of eighty three, he continues to teach with unwavering dedication in Jamshedpur, embodying the timeless spirit of a guru who lives through his art.

His latest work, Swarnanjali: Legacy of Bandishes, published by Harnoor Graphics, Amritsar, is not merely a book—it is a living testament to his lifelong devotion to music and its intricate traditions.

SWARANJALI: LEGACY OF BANDISHES

The book carries a deeply personal resonance, lovingly edited by his son, the renowned sitarist Shri Subrata De, along with Dr. Prianka Aroro. Subrata De, who has mastered the profound styles of Dhrupad, Gayaki, Tankaari, Alaapang and Gatkaari, has established himself as one of India’s most accomplished sitar artists. Yet, his words reveal the humility of a son fulfilling a cherished wish: “It’s my father’s wish to publish such a book and as a son I am trying my best to explore it, and dedicate it to his decades-long music.”

The release of Swarnanjali: Legacy of Bandishes in Jamshedpur unfolded as a radiant celebration of heritage, graced by eminent musicians and cultural dignitaries including Mihir Banerjee, Amarjeet Singh, Dinanath Upadhyay, Vibha Mishra, alongside social and cultural activist Purbi Ghosh and Amal Sangh Club President Samant Kumar. The evening reached its sublime crescendo with a mesmerizing sitar recital by Subrata De, accompanied by Pandit Amitabh Sen on tabla—an offering that reflected not only the grandeur of tradition but also the seamless continuity of heritage, where father and son together shaped a legacy destined to transcend generations.

Pandit Bhutnath De: A Life in Service of Hindustani Classical Music

Born in 1943, Pandit Bhutnath De has lived a life steeped in the discipline and devotion of Hindustani classical music. Initiated into vocal training by his father, he later refined his art under the guidance of illustrious gurus such as Shri Brojen Roy Choudhury, Tarit Mukherjee, Prof. Sachindas Motilal, Pandit T.L. Rana, and Pandit Jagdish Prasad. His journey was further enriched by learning Dhrupad from Pandit Paresh Bondopadhyay of the Bishnupur Gharana, a lineage known for its depth and purity of tradition.

Since 1976, Pandit De has nurtured countless students through his institution ‘Geetigunja’ in Jamshedpur, affiliated with Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad and Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh. His role as a senior examiner for these prestigious boards reflects his stature as a custodian of musical excellence. Beyond teaching, he has written insightful articles on music, composed bhajans, and created bandish in ragas, leaving behind a rich tapestry of scholarship and creativity.

His artistry has transcended borders, with performances and workshops in the UK, Bangkok and across India, where he has presented Khayal, Thumri, Bengali songs, and devotional bhajans. Even while serving for forty years in the South Eastern Railways, retiring as a gazetted officer from Tatanagar Railway Station, his devotion to music remained unwavering.

What makes his journey truly remarkable is his vision to bring classical music to the underprivileged, ensuring that passion and talent are never hindered by circumstance. His workshops at institutions such as the Indian Cultural Centre, Chulalongkorn University Bangkok, Swaranjali Delhi, and EZCC stand as testimony to his mission of inclusivity.

Today, Pandit Bhutnath De continues to teach and inspire, embodying the timeless spirit of a guru whose voice carries not only melody but also the essence of tradition, resilience, and compassion. His life is a radiant example of how music, when nurtured with sincerity, becomes both a personal journey and a collective legacy.

SWARNANJALI: LEGACY OF BANDISHES is more than a collection of compositions—it is a cultural beacon, a bridge between past and present, and a heartfelt offering to the classical tradition. It reminds us that true legacy lies in devotion, transmission, and the eternal resonance that binds hearts across time.
