Kala-Yoga Satsanga at Shri Ganga Varaga Nadheeswarar Temple: A Sacred Journey of Art and Devotion

On Sunday, 14th December 2025, artists, seekers, and spiritual travelers are invited to join a soulful gathering—Kala-Yoga Satsanga—at the ancient Shri Ganga Varaga Nadheeswarar Temple in Thirukarai, Villianur, Pondicherry. This serene temple visit is more than a pilgrimage; it’s a celebration of creativity, community and connection.

“We begin from Tasmai, A Centre for Art & Culture, at 3:30 p.m., reaching the temple by 4:00 p.m. Participants may arrange their own transport or opt for carpooling. The return is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., allowing ample time to absorb the temple’s tranquil energy and participate in a collective symbolic gesture of beauty and devotion,” says the organizers of the program.

Nestled just 11.2 km from Pondicherry, this temple holds a thousand-year legacy, believed to be first built by a Chola king in the 12th century CE. Its origins trace back to a submerged temple, and its rebirth in Villianur carries the spirit of resilience and reverence.

“Shri Ganga Varaga Nadheeswarar Temple is an ancient temple on the south bank of Sankaraparani River (Varaga Nadhi). This place is equal to Kasi temple in Banaras, hence it was called Thiru Kasi which later on got name as Thirukanji,” added.

The temple’s sanctum is flanked by idols of Sri Ganga Varaga and Sri Dwara Subramaniyar, with the Dwara Balaka standing guard. Legends speak of Sage Kashyapa’s vision and the deities’ presence dating back over 3000 years, making this site a living testament to devotion and time.

A warm welcome to all who walk the path of Kala-Yoga.
