STEP INTO THE WORLD OF COURAGE, CONFLICT, AND CREATIVITY AS SHAJILA ART GALLERY PRESENTS HOW TO SEE #1 WAR PAINTINGS, A POWERFUL NEW SERIES BY SENIOR ARTIST AND ART WRITER ASHOK BHOWMICK.

Inspired by the Hindi release of Ways of Seeing (Dekhne Ke Tareeke), this exhibition invites viewers to explore how war is portrayed and perceived through art. With dramatic brushwork and evocative imagery–Bhowmick’s paintings speak of history, emotion and the human spirit.

“The first session opens with renowned senior writer Ashok Bhowmick, who will guide us through the powerful world of war paintings, revealing their deep emotions, rich history and artistic layers. This special evening also celebrates the release of a thought-provoking book, adding another dimension to the conversation,” says the organizers of the show.

Renowned artist Ashok Bhowmick will take the audience on a stirring visual journey as he presents a special PowerPoint session on war paintings.

With a deep focus on the iconic works of Goya and Picasso, he will explore how these masters used bold strokes and emotional depth to express the chaos, courage and compassion of wartime. Their art, marked by a fearless freedom of tone and creation, continues to inspire generations—and Bhowmick’s reflections promise to open new ways of seeing.

ASHOK BHOWMICK — BRIDGING WORLDS THROUGH ART AND WORD

Born in Kanpur in 1953, Ashok Bhowmick is a globally celebrated artist whose mastery of cross-hatching has become his unmistakable signature. His powerful series—The Coal Mine, Warli, Jai Ho and The Bull—capture the pulse of human emotion in bold, contemporary strokes.

With over five decades of creative dedication, his journey has spanned continents, with group shows in India, Pakistan, Dubai, Barcelona, Sydney, and New York. Off the canvas, Bhowmick’s voice resonates through lecture halls, from Delhi’s Instituto Cervantes to Tokyo’s universities, where he explores themes like war, memory and Tagore’s visual legacy.

A prolific writer, he has penned novels, biographies, and essays on icons like Gulzar, Rabindranath Tagore, Badal Sircar, and Zainul Abedin, while shaping cultural conversations through journals, children’s magazines, and his weekly column in Prabhat Khabar. Whether through brush or pen, Ashok Bhowmick continues to inspire, connect and create with rare depth and grace.
